PLEASE NOTE:
The 1 MeV proton fluence data will be unavailable until further notice.
Problems originate with hardware on the primary GOES-7 satellite. Proton
fluence values for 10 MeV protons are correct and unaffected.
BRIEF SUMMARY OF EVENTS
-----------------------
Solar activity was low on 23 October. Region 6891 (S12E62) has rotated
into better view today and reveals itself to be an impressively complex and
very large solar region. It has a beta-delta magnetic configuration and
should be capable of producing major energetic activity.
Region 6886 (N09E02) experienced rapid substantial growth in both
white-light and H-alpha today, but did not produce any significant flare
activity.
NOTE: A major class X2.1/2B flare has erupted out of Region 6891 at 02:40 UT
on 24 October. This event will be covered in more detail with the daily
summary for 24 October.
Solar activity is expected to be moderate to high. Region 6891 is
extremely capable of producing at least minor M-class flares. It should also
be capable of generating several major energetic events as it transits the
solar disk.
The geomagnetic field has been mostly quiet to unsettled over the last
24 hours. Activity became enhanced to active levels after 18:00 UT.
Geomagnetic activity is expected to remain mostly unsettled to active. The
probability for geomagnetic storming is fading. The recurrent coronal hole
does not appear to be very geoeffective for this rotation.
Auroral activity has been sporadically active. High latitudes have
observed mostly low to moderate levels of activity. Lunar luminosity is
preventing observations from the middle latitude regions.
HF propagation conditions were normal over most regions today.
Conditions should continue mostly normal over the next 24 to 48 hours. A
moderate SID/SWF accompanied the major class X2.1/2B flare early in the UT
day of 24 October. This event will be covered in more detail tommorrow.
