START UP
SOFF BALLS will run on IBM and IBM compatible personal computers that
run DOS version 2.1 or later. You will need a least 256K of available
RAM memory.
Make a backup copy of the SOFF BALLS program and keep it in a safe
place. Periodically make a copy of your game files too.
SOFF BALLS can run from a floppy disk or hard drive. However, the
program runs much faster from a hard drive.
To run from a floppy disk, place the disk with the SOFF BALLS program
in the current disk drive and type "SB" at the DOS prompt. You can
record games on the disk with the SOFF BALLS program or on a separate
disk. A 5 1/4" disk (with 360K) will hold 200+ games with the SOFF
BALLS program and 800+ games without the program. 3 1/2" disks hold
many more games. To record games on a separate disk, start SOFF BALLS
and replace the game disk with the disk you want to record games on
when the first screen (screen with blinking "SOFF BALLS") comes up and
before advancing to the Main Menu.
To run from a hard drive, get current on the hard drive directory
where SOFF BALLS is stored and type "SB" at the DOS prompt. However,
you must first copy the program to the hard drive. To do this, place
a disk with the SOFF BALLS program on it in a disk drive (let's say
A:), get current on the hard drive directory where you want to copy
the program (let's say C: is the hard drive) and then type the
following at the DOS prompt: COPY A:SB.EXE C:
The more buffers you specify in your DOS CONFIG.SYS file the faster
SOFF BALLS will run. However, each buffer takes about 1/2K of memory
away from your main programs. Consult your DOS manual for more
information.

OVERVIEW
SOFF BALLS was written primarily for softball teams. Statistics are
offense oriented. However, SOFF BALLS is great for fastpitch softball
and baseball too. To use SOFF BALLS, record game results in a score
book, enter the score book results to SOFF BALLS, and then use the
program to view team records, game results, team and player
statistics, and print reports. Produce statistics during the season
and create a yearbook after the season.
Record games for up to 10 teams. A maximum of 9,999 total at bats
(200-300 games) can be recorded for each team with a roster limit of
40. Player results for up to 20 players can be recorded for each
game.
Here are some of the operational features you'll find in SOFF BALLS.
The program has many menus to help you. To select from a menu, type
the selection number or the hi-lighted letter. By the way, anytime
you press an invalid key, the program will "beep" to let you know.
Just try again. There are two special keys used in this program. The
ESC (escape) key and F8 (function key 8). Press ESC to navigate
backwards anywhere in the program. The specific purpose of ESC is
documented on the bottom of every screen. Press F8 anywhere in the
program to end SOFF BALLS. The purpose of other keys used by the
program is documented where they're used.

MAIN MENU
Main Menu choices are UPDATE, INQUIRE, SET COLORS, and HELP. Use
UPDATE to name teams, maintain team rosters, and record game results.
With INQUIRE you can view team records, game results, team and player
statistics, and print reports. Use SET COLORS to color customize your
screens. HELP takes you to this section.

UPDATE
When you select UPDATE from the Main Menu you will advance to the
Select Team for Update Screen which lists 10 teams. Use the ARROW
keys to select a team and press ENTER. This will take you to the
Update Menu where your choices are GAME, ROSTER, TEAM NAME, and SELECT
TEAM. Use GAME to record game results. Use ROSTER to set up and
maintain a team roster. Change a team name with TEAM NAME. SELECT
TEAM takes you back to the Select Team for Update Screen.
Select TEAM NAME from the Update Menu to change a team name. When you
select TEAM NAME, you will advance to the Change Team Name Screen.
Enter the new name and press ENTER. It's a good idea to include the
year in a team name (i.e. 1988 Hawks, 1989 Hawks, etc). Since all 10
teams begin with "No Name" as their name, it's best to name a team
before you set up a roster or record game results to avoid confusion.
The team name is displayed on most screens.
Select ROSTER from the Update Menu to set up and maintain a team
roster. Roster Menu choices are ADD, CHANGE, and DELETE. All players
are assigned a player number from 1 to 99. To add a player, select
ADD, enter a new player number, and then enter a player name. To
change a name, select CHANGE, enter an assigned player number, and
then enter the new player name. To delete a player from the roster,
select DELETE, and then enter an assigned player number. The roster
is displayed and modified after each update. One way to assign
numbers is to use the uniform number of the player. The roster limit
is 40 players. However, results can be recorded for all 99 player
numbers.
Select GAME from the Update Menu to record game results. Game Menu
options are ADD, CAHNGE, and DELETE. There is a three-step process
when you add or change a game. Complete the Game Screen, record
player results on the Player Screen, and then finalize the update on
the Verification Screen. When you select ADD, a game number will be
assigned automatically. With CHANGE, you will be asked for a game
number. When you select DELETE, you will be asked for a game number
and then taken straight to the Verification Screen. Select INQUIRE
from the Main Menu for game numbers if needed.
Enter the following information on the Game Screen:
game date runs scored and runs allowed
game location game type (league, tournament, miscellaneous)
opponents game arch (limited, unlimited, fastpitch, baseball)
innings played home or visitors
Limited arch and unlimited arch refer to slowpitch softball and
fastpitch refers to fastpitch softball. A miscellaneous game type can
be used for practice games, special games, or whatever you want. Move
around the Game Screen with TAB, ENTER, and ARROW keys. Press F1 or
select PLAYER SCREEN to advance to the Player Screen.
Page 8
UPDATE continued
Enter the results for each player on the Player Screen:
total at bats home runs
runs sacrifices
total hits walks
doubles strike outs
triples runs batted in
Total at bats (plate appearances) include walks and sacrifices. It's
up to you on how to score sacrifices and runs batted in. Results for
up to 20 players can be recorded. Player results are displayed on the
screen. Menu choices are ADD, CHANGE, and DELETE. To add player
results, select ADD, enter player number, and enter player results.
To change player results, select CHANGE, enter player number, and
change previous results. To delete player results, select DELETE,
and enter a player number. Press F1 to advance to Verification
Screen. Press F2 to view roster for player names and numbers.
A couple of notes about the Player Screen. It's advantageous to total
player results (runs, hits, etc) in your score book in the same order
they are entered on the Player Screen. This will make it easier to
enter and sight verify. Nine (9) is the highest number you can enter
for runs, hits, etc. THERE IS ONE EXCEPTION. For RUNS BATTED IN you
can enter A, B, C, D, E, F, and G which in effect is 10, 11, 12, 13,
14, 15, and 16 respectively. Also, you can record results for any of
the 99 possible player numbers, even if the number isn't on the
roster. Names can be assigned later from the Roster Menu, if desired.
The Verification Screen gives you a chance to review what was entered
on the Game Screen and the combined totals from the Player Screen.
When you add or change a game, you will be given a menu with the
choice to update (ADD or CHANGE game), cancel, or return to the Game
Screen. When you delete a game, you will be given a menu with the
choice to DELETE the game, or cancel the delete. Note, when you add a
game, the program will not let you advance to the Verification Screen
if the Game Screen is incomplete. However, you don't have to add
player results to add a game. They can be added later. Game updates
WILL NOT be saved on disk until ADD, CHANGE, or DELETE is selected
from the Verification Menu (IMPORTANT)!

INQUIRE
When you select INQUIRE from the Main Menu you will advance to the
Select Team for Inquire Screen which lists 10 teams. Use the ARROW
keys to select a team and press ENTER. This will take you to the
Inquire Menu where your choices are RECORD, GAMES, PLAYERS, and SELECT
TEAM. RECORD will display the team won/lost record. Select GAMES to
view game results. Display team and player statistics with PLAYERS.
SELECT TEAM takes you back to the Select Team for Inquire Screen.
You can print reports from within RECORD, GAMES, and PLAYERS. When
you elect to print a report, you will advance to the Print Report
Screen. Press F1 to toggle between IBM Compatible and Non IBM
Compatible printer character set. Select the type of printer you
have. Your choice will be saved on disk. Choosing IBM will give you
a better looking report, IF your printer has the extended characters.
Press ENTER to print report. All reports are designed for 8 1/2 x 11
paper. Note, the program will end if you attempt to print a report
without a printer.
Select RECORD to display the won/lost record for a team. Games
played, games won, games lost, and win percentage will be displayed
for league, tournament, miscellaneous, and total games. Press F1 to
print report.
With GAMES you can view game results one at a time. All the game
information is displayed. Team hits, runs, doubles, etc along with
slugging and batting averages are also displayed. Use ARROW keys and
SPACE BAR to walk through games. Press the HOME key to display the
first game and the END key for the last game. Press F1 for Game Type
Menu and select ALL, LEAGUE, TOURNAMENT, or MISCELLANEOUS to display
different types of games. Press F2 to display the players that
results were recorded for. Press F3 to print report. The report will
list all games for the selected game type.
Select PLAYERS to display team and player statistics. Players will be
listed in batting average order. Total at bats, runs, hits, etc are
displayed along with slugging and batting averages. Team totals are
displayed also. ARROW keys move bar line to hi-light a player. Use
PGUP and PGDN (page up and down keys) for paging if needed.
Press F1 from PLAYERS for selection box to compute statistics. Select
game type (ALL, LEAGUE, TOURNAMENT, MISCELLANEOUS) and game range.
Game range can be all games or a range of game numbers (games 5
through 10 for example). Press F1 to compute statistics after you
select. For example, you could compute statistics for all games,
league games, last 10 games, or games 10 through 20 for league. There
are many many possibilities.
Page 10
INQUIRE continued
Press F2 from PLAYERS to display definitions for all the statistics
headings.
Press F3 or F4 from PLAYERS to divide the player statistics into two
groups. Press F3 to divide the players into groups by TAB (total at
bats). Press F4 to divide the players by games played. Press F3 or
F4, enter number from 1 to 999, and press ENTER. For example, if you
want to divide the players so the upper group must have at least 20
games played, press F4, enter 20, and press ENTER. Both groups will
be listed in batting average order.
Press F5 from PLAYERS to print report. The report will reflect the
game type and range selected. There are many many reports possible!

the Main Menu Screens, one for the Inquire Screens, and one for the
Update Screens. Set background, window, foreground, and hi-light
colors. Select MAIN, INQUIRE, and UPDATE with the right/left ARROW
keys and select BACKGROUND, WINDOW, FOREGROUND, and HI-LIGHT with the
up/down ARROW keys. Press the SPACE BAR to change the color. A
Sample Screen shows you what the screen will look like. Press F1 to
set all screens the same as the Main Menu. Press ESC when you're
finished to return to the Main Menu.
