DIALING METHODS
The DIALING METHOD is simply the dialing steps you go through before
you actually start dialing the phone number. (If you are not going to
use LBB to dial, you can leave this blank.)
Every time you make a phone call you (subconsciously) determine how
you are going to dial. If you call a neighbor you know it is a local
call, you don't need to dial the area code:
555-1212
If you call another state you need to dial a 1 before the area code,
so you dial 11 digits:
1-408-555-1212
When you use a long distance carrier such as Sprint or MCI you get
numb fingers even before you start dialing the phone number of the
person you are trying to call:
767-1234 hear tone 12345 408-555-1212
If you have a PBX in your office then you need to dial 9 to get an
outside line. Then you determine whether the call is local or long
distance.
The dialing method is all the numbers that you dial, pauses that you
make, and so forth BEFORE you dial the actual phone number (with or
without area code).
SETTING UP A DIALING METHOD
You will note that several dialing methods have already been set up.
They are the more common dialing methods and will probably work fine
for you. Using the up and down arrow keys or the space bar to high-
light the different methods and pressing the return will allow you to
look at the steps taken for the various dialing methods.
To enter an additional dialing method do the following:
1. The MOST IMPORTANT STEP is to THINK through all of the steps
you take to dial a phone number.
2. Select an undefined dialing method with up and down arrow keys
or the space bar. Once highlighted, press the return key.
You now have the screen where a dialing method is created.
3. Enter a name for the method in the blank. (Ex. Sprint)
At this point you will see a box on the right side of the
screen. This contains the various actions that can be taken
when dialing.
4. Using the up and down arrow keys or the space bar, highlight
the action required. Press the return key to select that item.
Some of the choices (pause for XX seconds, dial XXXXX...) re-
quire numbers to be entered. Where necessary enter the appro-
priate digits then hit the return key.
5. Enter any additional steps your dialing method requires.
6. When the dialing method is complete press F9 (DONE). Exiting
to DOS will activate this new dialing method.
CHANGING A DIALING METHOD
Changing a dialing method is a simple procedure.
1. Highlight the dialing method you want to change using the
space bar and up - down arrow keys. Then press the return.
2. You will be asked if you want to REDEFINE, CHANGE NAME, DELETE,
or NOTHING.
Redefine means alter this dialing method.
Change Name means change only the name by which the dialing
method is referenced.
Delete means to throw this dialing method out.
Nothing means OOPS leave it alone, just checking.
DEFINITIONS OF DIALING OPERATIONS
Dialing a digit sequence
Used when a digit sequence such as a 9 (to get outside) or
9501088 (an access number for Sprint or MCI)needs to be dialed.
Used primarily for access type of numbers and not for Phone
Numbers. Phone numbers will be entered later.
Pause 0 to 60 seconds
You can insert a pause for a specific period of time. This is
very useful when you dial a number that requires a pause or
time to allow a connection to take place before you continue
dialing. Some long distance carriers (such as MCI or Sprint)
give a short beep signalling you to dial in the access code
and phone number you are calling. You would insert a pause
for one or two seconds before the next step in the dialing
method.
Dial number with area code
Dial all 10 digits of a phone number. For example, if the
phone number were 415-555-1212 all ten digits, including the
area code, would be dialed.
Dial number without area code
Dial 7 digits of a phone number. In the number 312-555-1212
only 555-1212 would be dialed.
Dial last X digits of phone number
Only the number of digits specified will be dialed. If 4
digits is specified then in the number 355-6331, only 6331
would be dialed. This is very useful in a Centrex phone sys-
tem.
Start Tone/Rotary Dialing
This gives you the ability to alternate between rotary and
tone dialing. This is very useful if you have a rotary phone
system and want to use Sprint or MCI.
Example:
dial 555-9812 (rotary)
Start Tone Dialing (switch to tone dialing)
dial 123456 (access code in tones)
Listen for Dial tone
This means that YOU pick up the handset and listen for the
dial tone. Once you hear the tone then you can press any
key and the dialing sequence will continue.
Note: If you select this option you will be prompted to de-
press a key and must do so before the dialing continues.
Using "pause for 0 to 60 seconds" is suggested unless the
length of time that it takes to receive dial tone varies from
call to call.
Hook Flash
A Hook Flash is a momentary depression of the button under the
handset of the telephone. A hook flash sends a signal to let
a PBX know that you want to do a PBX function such as call
forward or transfer. If, for example, you wanted to set up a
dialing method to transfer calls to someone else on your PBX,
you could:
Hook Flash
Dial last 4 digits
Note: Hook flash works only with the Dialer Board Accessory;
modems do not support this feature.
