OCR: " Natural Progession " Recently i have been having the same discussion with various people around the scene, the topic being the so called death of ANSI because of the advancement of VGA. I of course do not agree with that point of view. Although if you take a quick glance at the situation you might think that it is inevitable, let's look further into both sides of the coin. The VGA format, although it has been around for a long time, has not been used as a viable way to transmit graphics over your standard phone line. Why? Because until the integration of the WWW there hasn't been any way to have VGA graphics displayed to a remote viewer. Just a few people in the scene bothered with it, because they enjoyed drawing that particular format. These days, the World Wide Web is the newest thing. Everybody and their mom has a link to the net and is browsing the web, thus VGA "drawers" are in big demand, creating a boom in VGA artists joining up with scene groups. The once shunned and laughed at format is now taking over the art scene. Natural progression. Yes, most art packs now comprise 85% VGA and 13% ansi (2% for other formats such as RIP, ASCII). One might state the reasons for this lack of ANSI and abundance of VGA, "natural progression." That's what the Germans would have us believe, yet most people who use that arguement are leaving out the most important parts. Reasons why one would believe ANSI as a whole is in decline: - Most of the oldschool artists that have made ANSI such a popular format have "retired from the art scene." In the last 2-3 years; Alter Ego, Andrew Nice, Beastie, Jed, Tempus Thales, Guile, Shaggy, Bad Karma (the list goes on and on) have all dropped out to pursue other things. Recently leaving or being way innactive are: Kamikazee, Somms, Red Leader, Maestro, Mr. Sinister, Terminator 2, Hannibal Lector, Incubus, etc. You get my point, and it is a strong one. The BIGGEST reason for ANSI's decline is the loss of so many great artists in the timespan of 2 or 3 years, not to mention the WAY old school guys that left before that. The fact that only a few of the newer artists are actually incredibly good (notice the "incredibly") does not help to replace the great loss of all the artist's stated in the above paragraph. Thus a rutt is created. AND. . . yes, I'll say it. Most people in the scene right now are idiots and don't give a shit about anything else but their own little agenda. Funny thing is most of these people are the ones who always complain about how much the scene sucks. Makes you wonder, doesnt it? Those are the REAL reason's why uga is taking over the art packs ... Not because the scene is demanding for more VGA. .. how many times do i hear " damn this pack is so damn big ... can someone send me the ansi's from it? " everymonth? Too many times for me to believe VGA is taking over They all tell me ( they being the VGA artists of course ) ansi will be totally dead in a year. .. That started to make me wonder about how ansi will die. I couldnt find any reasons to bring truth to that statement .. all i came up with we're reasons why ansi will be around for a long time to come. The scene as a whole is converting to the Internet at an incredible pace, the www is front and center in this movement, but people forget about one thing .. telnetable bbs's, unhackable, restricted access, moderated user base. . . all things the WEB cant recreate .. Everybody can access a web page, a web page contrary to popular opinion can be hacked into ( by reaching the account of the user who runs it ) wich is quite easy ... and will always be no matter what they try and do. Thus creating more demand for a stable system, and what would that be? telnetable bbs's it doesnt have the perks of the web but it has everything one needs. <Im stretching a little bit here :) .. hey cut me some slack > Until text mode is obsolete wich it will never be, ansi will be around, so will ascii and so will rip .. people will find new uses for these quick, easy to use formats .. And until people start to find ANSI art ugly and nobody wants to draw it anymore it will be around. .. Contrary to popular opinion the scene is a hobby for most and a business opurtunity for others ( vga artists ) us lowly ansi artists will never get a 90k/year job for drawing ansi and we know that ... We do it because we enjoy the challenge and hell .. we love those funny looking blocks. Deeply Disturbed <Twilight> ..
