OCR: ≥ IRC RULES! (?) By Rusty < >> alt . 176 issue 1 < The IRC. Whats my main concern with the ansi scene, you may be wondering? Is it bad? No. Certainly not. How could someone in an underground computer society spanning the globe dislike a free realitime chat protocol? Well its tough to dislike, and for most of us, its tough to log off. I'm primarily concerned that the IRC is dominating much of the time any given artist spends in the scene. While I'm sitting here writing this, I could be drawing an ansi or gererating some sort of output, doing something useful with myself. Or I could be on IRC. Most likely I'd find myself in #ansi. Purveying that which is #ansi, one might find the occasional uNF, ascii drawings of people sodomizing livestock, the classic drug use brag session, complete mindlessness, or even the elusive pSSSfUFH. Shit. I left the mention of ansi discussion out of that last list. No, wait ... it's not there for a reason ... Probably because nobody on IRC is talking about it. Yeah. I understand the need for casual conversation. I've even uttered my fair share of uNF's and other mindless babbling, but it's just getting out of hand. Nothing of importance ever gets said on IRC and most of us are content to sit around and wait for a valid excuse to sit in IRC, such as a conversation of nominal worth or someone to greet. This is usually ended by falling asleep or getting a ping timeout. Either way it doesn't matter. Whethere the average scener is talking like there's no tomorrow or not saying shit, nothing ever gets accomplished! Have we taken the institution that is the art scene and turned it into a pointless chat session? Shame on you. You know who you are. But then again, you probably aren't reading this. You're probably trying to takeover #Spain or /msg' ing other scener's in an *HILARIOUS* solicitation for anal sex! NO! It never stops being funny? What could you be doing in the time 'spent' on the IRC? Well, you could be writing an emag of your own, voicing your own opinion. After all, it doesn't matter if you disagree with me or not. If you don't get involved then what you think doesn't matter. What I'm talking about is activism. Nobody pursues a hobby with the intention of taking it up for the sole purpose of doing nothing within its boundries. People don't decide to play basketball just so they can avoid basketball. What the fuck kinda sense does that make? None. And frankly, if you're not gonna do anything but sit around in front of MIRC or an ircII screen, then get the hell out or use the IRC for what its meant for - communication, a means to an end - not an end in itself. Enough of that ... I think I've made my point. 6 -
