Crossword puzzles and mathematics cross paths in this time-honored favorite of puzzle solvers. The object of Sum-It Squares is to fill a crossword-style puzzle, but with numbers instead of words. The trick is that the and numbers must add up to certain sums both horizontally and vertically. Each column and row has a value that must be formed using the digits one through nine. A digit cannot be used more than once in any column or row entry. The sum that must be formed is shown in the and squares containing diagonal lines. The value above the diagonal line indicates the sum that must be formed using the sequence of squares to the right. The value below the and diagonal line shows the sum that must be formed in the and sequence of squares below.
This is the sort of puzzle that should appeal to people who are both left and right brained, and should be a special delight for crossword players looking for a new variation.
If you successfully solve a puzzle at the largest grid size, without "cheating" by using the "Check Puzzle" key (until you are finished solving the puzzle, when you need to press "Check Puzzle" to verify your solution), you will be told a secret word which you may write on our Report Card and send to us in order to be included in the and Hall of Fame list on a subsequent issue.
