I thought it was an ordinary day, just an ordinary day. I was headed to the |1| when I noticed a man |2| |3| in the street.
I walked over and asked him, "What are those?"
"These are my pets," he answered. "|4|, and |5|. I like to |6| them at least once per |7|. It's good for their |8|. Makes them |9|."
"But...why would you want...|3| for pets?" I asked, puzzled. "Even if they are very nice |3|, I mean," I stammered hastily, not wanting to offend him.
"Ah, but you don't know, young one," he said, |10|. "For I am a wizard, and I see things differently than most."
"Come with me," he said briskly. "What is your name, young one?"
"|11|," I said, a little unsure. He did seem a nice old man, though rather odd. He |12| when he walked, and...actually, he didn't walk so much as he |13|. I tried imitating him and |13|, too, but I was much more |14| at it than he was.
"It's just over here," he said, |10|. He motioned to a large |15| which I could swear had suddenly appeared out of nowhere, smack in the middle of the street. I looked around to see if anyone else had witnessed this miraculous occurrence, but, no, everyone simply went about their business as though nothing was amiss.
"Sit," he commanded with a grand gesture at the |15|. I did.
"Now, |11|, what is your favorite food?" he asked.
"|16|," I answered, and miraculously, it appeared.
"A little refreshment," he said courteously.
"I'd |17| |16| every |18|, if I had my way," I said |19|.
"And so you shall, |11|," he said. He |20| with his |21|.
"Now, whenever you wish for something, it happens," he said with a |22| |23|.
"|24|!" I |25|. "Thanks!"
"Ah, but you may find that you won't always want this power," he said, suddenly serious. "Just remember, if you want to stop using this power, say out loud, `In a minute.' But you must do it in a minute's time in order for it to work. Do you understand, |11|?"
I said I did, but I wasn't really |26|. Just think, anything I wanted, at a moment's thought.
"Good, then," he answered. And then he and the |3| and the large |15| were gone, and the street was empty again.
I |27| home, slowly, just in time for my dad to stick his head out the door. "Lunch," he said |28|, and disappeared back inside.
"What are we having?" I asked, following him inside.
"|29|," he answered.
"Yuck, I hate |29|," I said, making a face. "I wish we weren't having that."
And suddenly, the plate of |29|, was gone, and my dad stood polishing the top of the empty stove.
"Okay, now go do your homework," he said. "Later on, maybe we can catch a movie or something."
"But I'm hungry," I said, confused. "You just said we were having lunch."
He looked irritated and said, "We just had lunch. Go do your homework."
I grumbled my way upstairs and into my bedroom, when suddenly I thought, "I can have |16| for lunch." And there it was.
I ate, and then looked at my homework and said, "I wish I didn't have homework." And it was gone.
No homework! But I didn't feel so good. I felt |30| from so much |16|, so I decided to lie down and take a little nap.
The wizard was there when I woke up. "How'd you get here?" I said, still |31| from my nap.
"I'm a wizard. I can do anything, |11|," he said. "And how are you, my young friend?"
I still felt |30| from so much |16|, but I smiled anyway and said "|32|." I wasn't going to let him know how I felt.
"Just remember, `In a minute,' he said, with a wise |33|. Then he was gone.
Well, you can probably guess what happened. We didn't go to any movie that day because I felt |30|, and the next day in school, I didn't know any answers because I hadn't done my homework. I'd made it go away, but I hadn't done it. My teacher, |34| usually calls on me, and I usually know the answer.
I suppose it could have gotten a lot worse, but the wizard came to see me the other night, and I asked him to take my "wishing" power away.
"Done," he said, |35| |36|, with his |21|.
I felt |37|.
"Use this as a lesson, |11|," he said. "You may not have the wishing power anymore, but it never hurts to say, `In a minute,' when you are about to make a rash decision."
