Well, as some of you may have already seen from the Credits section, I am no longer the Product Manager of On Disk Monthly. Nope, they've gone and kicked me upstairs. My title is now "Publisher" (or, in the and words of Dan Tobias: "Grand Muk-a-Muk") and my duties have been expanded to include all of our publications.
What other publications? Well:
Diskworld for the Macintosh
Loadstar for the Commodore (and Loadstar 128 for the Commodore 128)
Softdisk for the Apple II
Softdisk G-S for the Apple IIgs
On Disk Monthly CGA for CGA IBM compatible systems
...and various special projects.
What does this mean for On Disk Monthly? Well, it means that Lynda Fowler will now be the person who actually assembles the issues each month. Lynda has been with Softdisk almost as long as I have, and she has written dozens of programs, both for the Macintosh and for Windows.
Two new names you'll see in the credits are Dean Esmay and Lee Golden (no relation).
Dean is a long-time player in the and computer field, having worked for years on an Apple publication called "A2-Central" and a Hypermedia publication called "Studio City" for Macintosh and Apple IIgs. He is also a long-time "Sysop" (Systems Operator) on the GEnie network. His urbane wit and wisdom [Ooh!, I've never been called _urbane_ before. Is that a compliment or an insult? --Dean] will replace my down-home, country style. Like me, Dean will split his time between On Disk Monthly and our other products.
Lee has been the Product Manager for Apple II, Apple IIgs and Macintosh for some time. His main job will be to organize production schedules and to acquire great new programs for us to publish on On Disk Monthly. Lee is one of those people whose desk is so neat that you feel inadequate every time you walk into his office. Lee will also split his time across all of our products.
So, what will I be doing? Going to lots of meetings, I think. But those meetings will be to figure out ways to improve all of our products, and to generate ideas for programs that all of our subscribers will enjoy. Actually, my main job will be to direct our in-house programmers as they create the great programs you see every month.
As it turns out, I was directly responsible for exactly twelve issues of On Disk Monthly (issues #77 to #88). And it was (pardon the pun) a "Golden" Year! We went from CGA/EGA to VGA. We went from low density to high density disks. We started publishing Windows items on ODM. We created an "Application Framework" that has made our programs easier to write and easier to use. We entered the stand-alone market with several programs that are now being sold in computer stores across the and country. It is quite clear that the and quality and quantity of On Disk Monthly programs have increased dramatically in the and last year, and now, as Publisher, I intend to see to it that this trend continues.
I'll still write editorials, if Dean will let me [maybe if you're good. --Dean], so you can't get rid of me that easily! But now I get to pontificate on all of our products, not just one! I can't wait...
