  8.    Have you ever sat staring at a directory listing full of .TXT and
  9. .DOC files and wondered what exactly was in those files?  You may
  10. have used the DOS TYPE command, but your file scrolls across the
  11. screen at warp speed in one direction only.  Of course you could fire
  12. up your trusty editor, but that takes too long--you just want to take
  13. a peek.  What you need is a text file lister!
  14.  
  15.    EZ SCAN is the solution to your dilemma.  This powerful,
  16. easy-to-use utility allows you to view your text files on the screen
  17. and print part or all of them to your printer.  You can search for
  18. text, set a marker to return to, and set parameters that affect the
  19. way your file is displayed.  You can even change the background and
  20. foreground colors of your displayed text.  Make your life easier and
  21. your computing environment more productive:  Copy EZ.EXE to your
  22. utility directory and make sure that directory is on your path.
  23. Then, from anywhere on your system invoke EZ SCAN to peruse those
  24. mysterious text files.

  27. ^C^1Using It Is EZ^0
  28.  
  29.    To invoke EZ SCAN from DOS, simply type ^1EZ^0.  You will be
  30. placed in the Main Menu with the default settings listed in the
  31. Current File and View Settings window (more about this later).  The
  32. Main Menu has four options that pull down sub-menus:  File,
  33. Parameters, About, and Quit.  Use the left and right arrow keys to
  34. highlight an option, then press ENTER to select that option.  ESCAPE
  35. backs out of any selection or exits EZ SCAN.  Pressing F1 provides
  36. you with context-sensitive help from anywhere in the program.  The
  37. four Main Menu options are explained below:

  39. ^1File^0
  40.    This pull-down menu offers 4 selections:
  41.  
  42.    ^1View A File^0
  43.        Displays files to view from the current drive and directory
  44.        and with the set file specs (see below).  Move highlight bar
  45.        with arrow keys and select with ENTER.  Once you have pressed
  46.        ENTER, the file will be loaded for viewing and/or printing.

  49.    ^1Change Drive^0
  50.        Select a physical drive to read from.  Up to 6 system drives
  51.        are detected and displayed in a menu.  Move highlight bar with
  52.        arrow keys and select with ENTER.  The EZ default setting is
  53.        the current DOS drive.

  55.    ^1Change Directory^0
  56.        Select a directory on the current drive.  This option builds a
  57.        graphic directory tree for up to 255 directories on your
  58.        drive.  Including file names, paths are supported up to 95
  59.        characters, and visual display of the directory tree is
  60.        supported to 10 levels with graphic accuracy.  Move highlight
  61.        bar with arrow keys and select with ENTER.  The EZ default
  62.        setting is the current DOS directory.

  64.    ^1Set File Specs^0
  65.        Enter a filename or file specs for directory search.  Any spec
  66.        can be entered, even *.EXE; however, non-text files will
  67.        appear as random characters (gibberish).  The EZ default
  68.        setting is *.*.

  71.    This pull-down menu offers 5 selections:

  73.    ^1No Parameters^0
  74.        Displays text files as is with no special formatting used
  75.        except that ASCII characters 0 to 15 are removed.  Other
  76.        control characters embedded by text editors are left intact
  77.        and margins are respected.  This is the EZ default setting.

  79.    ^1No Extended Characters^0
  80.        Displays text files with all control characters (ASCII
  81.        characters 0 to 31) and extended characters removed.  Margins
  82.        are respected.
  83.  
  84.    ^1No Left Margins^0
  85.        Displays text files with left margins ignored and ASCII
  86.        characters 0 to 15 removed.
  87.  
  88.    ^1Word Wrap Lines^0
  89.        Displays text files with long lines of text wrapped onto the
  90.        next line.  Normally, if a line is too long to fit on one
  91.        screen line, it is truncated.  Word wrapping breaks lines at
  92.        word breaks and continues on the next screen line.  The EZ
  93.        default setting is OFF.

  95.    ^1Change Display Colors^0
  96.        Displays text in 36 color combinations or 2 monochrome
  97.        combinations.  Use arrow keys to move highlight bar and select
  98.        with ENTER.  The EZ default setting is light gray on black.

  113. ^C^1Viewing And Printing Your File^0
  114.  
  115.    Once you have selected a file to view, the file is loaded and is
  116. displayed on the screen in accordance with your set parameters.  The
  117. following commands are active:
  118.  
  119.    UP ARROW      Move up 1 line.
  120.    DOWN ARROW    Move down 1 line.
  121.    PGUP          Move up 1 page.
  122.    PGDN          Move down 1 page.
  123.    HOME          Move to beginning of file.
  124.    END           Move to end of file.
  125.    CTRL-END      Automatic scroll to end of file.  Speed of scroll is
  126.                  controlled by numbers 1 (fastest) to 9 (slowest).
  127.    CTRL-PGDN     Move to place marker set with F8 if one has been set.
  128.    F1            Context-sensitive help.  (Help is always available.)
  129.    F7            Print all or part of file.  Press F1 for help here.
  130.    F8            Toggle place marker ON and OFF.
  131.    F9            Search for text.  Press F1 for help here.
  132.    ENTER         Searches for next occurrence of entered/marked text.

  137.    The Current File and View Settings are displayed in the middle of
  138. the Main Menu screen.  The EZ SCAN default settings are shown below:

  150.    To bring up a text file faster for immediate viewing, you can
  151. invoke EZ SCAN from DOS with a text file command line parameter.
  152. Simply type ^1EZ filename^0, where filename is the name of the text
  153. file to view and/or print.  You may also include DOS wildcards in the
  154. filename to bring up a list of files to choose from.

  156.   To select foreground and background colors from the command line,
  157. type ^1EZ /C color^0, where color is a number from the following list
  158. of foreground/background color combinations:
