INSTRUCTIONS FOR CRIBBAGE SQUARES
@ OBJECT OF THE GAME
The object of CRIBBAGE SQUARES is to
place sixteen cards, one at a time, in
a 4x4 playing grid to make the best
possible Cribbage hands, vertically and
horizontally. A seventeenth card is
turned up to complete each of the eight
hands you'll create.
@ STRATEGY
Players will develop their own unique
strategies for CRIBBAGE SQUARES, but it
is generally best to try to set up
combinations of fifteen going in one
direction and runs and double runs in
the other direction.
@ THE SET UP
When you run CRIBBAGE SQUARES, the
4x4 grid will be displayed. Each square
is designated by a letter of the
alphabet, from 'A' to 'P'.
As many as four players may compete.
Enter the number playing in this
session and, at the prompt, enter the
name of each player.
You must then enter the amount of
time each player has in which to make
his play after each card is displayed.
The time may vary for each player,
providing a system of handicapping the
game to give lesser skilled players a
chance to compete by giving them more
time to consider their play.
@ THE PLAY
Once set-up is complete, the deck is
shuffled until you press a key. A
second key press displays the first
card.
The first player must then designate
one of the squares into which to place
the turned up card within the time
limit. Failure to place a card within
the time limit results in a penalty of
five points being assessed each time
the clock runs down.
When sixteen cards have been turned
up and placed in the grid, the play is
finished, a seventeenth card is
revealed to complete each hand, and
scoring begins.
@ CONTROLS
Players indicate their moves by
pressing the letter that corresponds to
the square into which they wish to drop
the turned up card.
If a player specifies a space that is
already occupied, or hits an illegal
key (not A-P), a warning beep sounds,
but time continues to tick off the
clock. Make a correct play and
continue.
During either play or scoring, the
Escape <Esc> key will temporarily halt
the program. Press Escape again to
continue.
@ THE SCORING
The computer scores each of the eight
hands, first the rows top to bottom,
then the columns left to right. Each
element, i.e., fifteens, pairs, runs,
flushes, and nibs, are displayed
separately so the player may follow the
scoring as it takes place. (The rules
for scoring Cribbage hands follow.)
Once all four rows and all four
columns have been scored, the total is
displayed and the game ends - or the
hand is prepared for the next player.
The scoring process can be speeded up
by pressing any key to move to the next
hand once you are satisfied with the
scoring of the hand being shown.
@ MULTI-PLAYER GAMES
When more than one player is
specified, one player plays his game
completely through before it is the
next player's turn. However, all the
players play the same hand. Therefore,
players whose turns have not yet come
up should refrain from observing the
game. To do otherwise is CHEATING!!
@ THE FINISH
When all the players have finished,
CRIBBAGE SQUARES will display a
complete statistical report, showing
the current, accumulated, and average
scores for all players this session.
You are then given the option of
playing another game or quitting.
THE RULES FOR SCORING CRIBBAGE
@ FIFTEENS
Each combination of cards totalling
15 scores 2 points. Face cards count
as 10, others as their spot value.
@ PAIRS
Each pair of the same rank scores 2
points. 3 of a kind scores 6 points,
4 of a kind scores 12 points.
@ RUNS
Each combination of 3 or more cards
in sequence scores 1 point for each
card in the sequence.
@ FLUSH
Score 4 points if all the cards in a
hand are the same suit. Add one if
the 17th card is also that suit.
@ HIS NIBS

as the 17th card scores 1 point. If
the 17th card is a jack, score two.
