Welcome to AXE - Guitar Identification Software
Congratulations ! You have become one of the first members of a new
generation of guitar enthusiast. This platform is dedicated to the
consolidation, and expansion of, the vintage guitar knowlege base.
This is the first software platform dedicated exclusively to guitar
identification. This template, or format, can be applied to any
number of items, but for now the focus is strictly guitars.
No one tool can eliminate the need to actually view, handle, and,
heaven forbid, play a guitar to determine the qualities relevant to
valuation. In other words, not all 1959 Les Pauls are equal, but some
are more equal than others. This tool can store most relevant research
data in one collective place and provide a means to distribute
information among all users.
Using AXE and a network
AXE requires about 200kb of free RAM, so users with network connections
or other TSRs ( Terminate Stay Resident programs ) should have no
problems with memory. If so, please report this as soon as possible,
especially with respect to the type of hardware involved.
The files are shareable on a network and several users can access
AXE at the same time. However, no specific provision has been made
for file locking, and theoretically different users could simultaneously
update text files. Network systems such as Novell 3.xx will prevent
different users from simultaneously opening the same file so this
should not be a problem.
AXE and Windows
AXE is supplied with a PIF file to ease the usage under Microsoft
Windows 3.1. The application has been tested running both under a
DOS box as well as a dedicated application setup within Windows.
No special installation is required, but the user must supply the
proper working directory if using Norton Desktop ( or the like )
and any difficulty is encountered with the AXE.PIF.
An icon is also included, AXE.ICO, and must be selected as the
program icon by the user when adding AXE to Windows.
Viewer Limitation
GDS is an excellent cataloging viewer that is the underpinning
of all image display in this product. However, it has one known
limitation. When taking command line parameters ( as is done here
in the Database SHOW function ), an apparent counter is being run
to allow the program to only execute TEN occurrances. This means
that only 10 pictures can be viewed from the database in any one
session.
The manifestation of this issue is that on approximately the
eleventh (sometimes twelth) SHOW image request, a message "blinks"
and returns to the database without showing the image. From this
point forward, the viewer will not function again until the database
is exited. Simply re-enter the database, FIND the record location
desired and continue.
IF the picture has not been installed, or subsequently deleted, the
database will "blink" and return. Remember, a "blink" will still
count as an occurrance.
