  31. I.   Quick start: Running DSPINSTL
  32.  
  33.      If you are an experienced user of OS/2 2.0 you will probably be able to
  34.      install the Stealth VRAM drivers simply by starting the installation
  35.      program and following the prompts.  After you have the drivers installed,
  36.      BE SURE TO READ "General information about these drivers" and "Known
  37.      problems."
  38.  
  39.      Here are 6 tips to save you grief:
  40.  
  41.      1. These drivers support OS/2 2.0 GA with the Service Pak. Their Seamless
  42.         Windows support may not work correctly under OS/2 2.0 GA.  Both
  43.         PM and Seamless support may work incorrectly under the current 2.1 betas.
  44.  
  45.      2. If you have installed the OS/2 system files on a drive other than C:,
  46.         you must install these drivers manually.  DO NOT attempt to use the
  47.         installation utility.
  48.  
  49.      3. If you have downloaded these drivers from a bulletin board, make sure
  50.         you place all of the files on a single diskette or into their own
  51.         directory on your hard disk.  We recommend installation from a diskette.
  52.  
  53.      4. The installation program expects to find OS/2 initially configured for
  54.         a VGA. (VGA is the configuration OS/2 2.0 installs by default for the
  55.         Stealth VRAM.)
  56.  
  57.         If your CONFIG.SYS file has been modified to use IBM's BVHSVGA.DLL
  58.         or VSVGA.SYS, you should return your configuration to VGA before
  59.         running DSPINSTL.  You may do this by reinstalling OS/2 2.0, or by
  60.         editing your CONFIG.SYS file.
  61.  
  62.      5. Before you attempt to install these drivers, run OS/2 CHKDSK on your boot
  63.         partition.  If CHKDSK reports errors, FIX THEM before your run DSPINSTL.
  64.         (To fix errors on the boot partition, you must reboot from your OS/2
  65.         Installation diskette, escape to the [A:] prompt at the first
  66.         opportunity, and run CHKDSK C: /F from OS/2 2.0 Diskette 2.)
  67.  
  68.      6. The Stealth VRAM SMODE utility does not work under OS/2.  To select
  69.         the correct refresh rate for your monitor, set the Stealth's PowerUp
  70.         Monitor Configuration according to the instructions on page 1:7 of
  71.         your Stealth VRAM User's Manual.  DSPINSTL will offer you the same
  72.         options as are listed in the manual on page 1:7.
  73.  
  74.      TO INSTALL:
  75.  
  76.      1. Start a windowed OS/2 command prompt.
  77.  
  78.      2. Change the default drive (and/or directory) to the one where you've
  79.         placed the Stealth VRAM OS/2 Driver diskette (or driver files).
  80.  
  81.      3. Type DSPINSTL and press <Enter>.
  82.  
  83.      4. Select PRIMARY DISPLAY and press OK.
  84.  
  85.      5. Follow the prompts to perform a FULL UPGRADE from VGA.
  86.  
  87.      6. If DSPINSTL asks whether to overwrite an already installed driver,
  88.         answer YES.
  89.  
  90.      7. When installation is complete, DSPINSTL returns to its main panel.
  91.         Select CANCEL to quit.
  92.  
  93.      8. Exit from the windowed OS/2 prompt, shutdown OS/2, and reboot.
  94.  
  95. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  96.  
  97. II.  If you are running OS/2 2.1 . . .
  98.  
  99.      The display drivers in this release have not been tested under OS/2 2.1 GA
  100.      and therefore cannot be recommended for use with OS/2 2.1.  
  101.  
  102.      OS/2 2.1 is currently in BETA release, which means that we are not yet
  103.      able to verify the correct operation of these drivers with the GA release of
  104.      OS/2 2.1.
  105.  
  106.      After OS/2 2.1 GA is released, Diamond Technical Support will have
  107.      information on the availability of OS/2 2.1 drivers for the Stealth VRAM.  
  108.  
  109. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  110.  
  111. III. If your OS/2 system files are not on drive C: . . .
  112.  
  113.      By default OS/2 installs its system files, including display drivers,
  114.      on drive C:  This is the only configuration currently supported by
  115.      IBM's DSPINSTL utility.  DO NOT RUN DSPINSTL IF YOUR SYSTEM FILES ARE
  116.      NOT ON DRIVE C:
  117.  
  118.      You may, however, install the Stealth VRAM drivers manually.  This
  119.      procedure requires that you (1) select the correct files, (2) unpack
  120.      them to a temporary directory on your hard disk, (3) edit your
  121.      CONFIG.SYS and WINOS2 SYSTEM.INI files, (4) reboot from the installation 
  122.      disk and copy the files to the appropriate directories.
  123.  
  124.      For step-by-step instructions, see the next section, "Manual installation."
  125.  
  126. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  127.  
  128. IV.  Manual installation
  129.  
  130.      If you must install the Stealth VRAM OS/2 drivers manually, here is the
  131.      procedure.  (This procedure is best performed by a person experienced in
  132.      maintaining OS/2 systems.  It is not for the inexperienced.)
  133.  
  134.      1.  Select the correct files. 
  135.  
  136.          We suggest you make a list of the files you will need for
  137.          for your system configuration..
  138.  
  139.          (a) ALL CONFIGURATIONS REQUIRE EACH OF THESE FILES:
  140.

  146.          (b) SELECT ONE OF THE FOLLOWING PAIRS OF FILES:

  148.                 -> to run the PM desktop at 1024x768 (256 colors)

  152.                 -> to run the PM desktop at 800x600  (256 colors)

  158.                 Note:  To make this selection you'll need to know the BIOS
  159.                 version of your Stealth VRAM card and the PowerUp Monitor
  160.                 Configuration for which your Stealth VRAM is set (see switch
  161.                 settings section in the Stealth VRAM User's Manual).

  204.      2. Unpack the selected files to a temporary directory.
  205.  
  206.           (a) While running OS/2 2.0, open a windowed or full-screen OS/2
  207.               prompt and create a temporary directory (let's call it SVRAMOS2).
  208.  
  209.           (b) Make SVRAMOS2 the default directory.
  210.  
  211.  
  212.           (c) Copy the files on your list of selected driver files from the
  213.               distribution diskette into SVRAMOS2.
  214.  
  215.           (d) Execute the following commands from the OS/2 command prompt:
  216.  
  217.                UNPACK *.DL@
  218.  
  219.                UNPACK *.DR@
  220.  
  221.                UNPACK *.SY@
  222.  
  223.                UNPACK *.FO@
  224.  
  225.           (e) To clean up, execute the following commands:
  226.  
  227.                DEL *.DL@
  228.  
  229.                DEL *.DR@
  230.  
  231.                DEL *.SY@
  232.  
  233.                DEL *.FO@
  234.  
  235.      3. Edit your CONFIG.SYS file.
  236.  
  237.           (a) Load your CONFIG.SYS file into the OS/2 System Editor.  You may wish to
  238.               save a backup copy before you proceed.
  239.  
  240.           (b) Look for the following line:
  241.  
  242.                DEVINFO=SCR,VGA,[sysdrive]:\OS2\VIOTBL.DCP
  243.  
  244.                      (where "[sysdrive]" is the drive on which your OS/2 system
  245.                      files reside)
  246.  
  247.               and CHANGE THE LINE TO:
  248.  
  249.                DEVINFO=SCR,BGA,[sysdrive]:\OS2\VIOTBL.DCP
  250.  
  251.           (c) Look for the following line:
  252.  
  253.                SET VIO_VGA=DEVICE(BVHVGA)
  254.  
  255.               and CHANGE THE LINE TO:
  256.  
  257.                SET VIO_VGA=DEVICE(BVHVGA,BVHENH)
  258.  
  259.           (d) Add the line:
  260.  
  261.                DEVICE=[sysdrive]:\OS2\MDOS\VENH.SYS
  262.  
  263.                      (where "[sysdrive]" is the drive on which your OS/2 system
  264.                      files reside.  BE SURE TO OMIT THE SQUARE BRACKETS!)
  265.  
  266.           (e) Save your modified CONFIG.SYS file.
  267.  
  268.  
  269.      4. Edit your WINOS2 SYSTEM.INI file
  270.  
  271.           (a) Load your WINOS2 SYSTEM.INI file into the System Editor. (You'll
  272.               find SYSTEM.INI in the \OS2\MDOS\WINOS2 directory.)
  273.  
  274.           (b) Look for the following line:
  275.  
  276.                sdisplay.drv=swinvga.drv
  277.  
  278.           (c) Change this line as follows:
  279.  
  280.                IF you are installing the 1024x768 driver set:
  281.  
  282.                     sdisplay.drv=scar1k.drv
  283.  
  284.                OTHERWISE
  285.  
  286.                     sdisplay.drv=scar800.drv
  287.  
  288.           (d) Save your modified SYSTEM.INI file and close the editor.
  289.  
  290.  
  291.      5. Reboot from the installation disk and copy the driver files.
  292.  
  293.           (a) Close all running applications and shut down OS/2.
  294.  
  295.           (b) Place the OS/2 2.0 Installation Disk in drive A: and reboot
  296.               your computer.
  297.  
  298.           (c) As the OS/2 boot proceeds, look for your first opportunity
  299.               to escape to the [A:\] prompt (this will be a screen of blue
  300.               text on a white background).  Press <Esc> when the screen
  301.               appears and wait for the command prompt.
  302.  
  303.           (d) Play it safe:  Place the OS/2 2.0 DIskette 2 in drive A: and
  304.               run CHKDSK [sysdrive]: /F from the floppy.
  305.  
  306.           (e) Save the files necessary to restore your VGA configuration
  307.               (just in case).  Switch to your [sysdrive]:\OS2\DLL directory,
  308.               create a subdirectory called VGA, and switch to that subdirectory.
  309.  
  310.               Now execute the following commands from [sysdrive]:\OS2\DLL\VGA
  311.  
  312.                     COPY ..\DISPLAY.DLL
  313.                     COPY ..\*.FON
  314.  
  315.           (f) Make your SVRAMOS2 directory the default.
  316.  
  317.           (g) Execute the following commands to copy the Stealth VRAM drivers:
  318.  
  319.                COPY *.DLL [sysdrive]:\OS2\DLL
  320.  
  321.                COPY *.FON [sysdrive]:\OS2\DLL
  322.  
  323.                COPY *.SYS [sysdrive]:\OS2\MDOS
  324.  
  325.                COPY *.DRV [sysdrive]:\OS2\MDOS\WINOS2\SYSTEM
  326.  
  327.           (h) Remove any diskette from the A: drive and reboot.  If the drivers
  328.               have been copied to the correct directories and CONFIG.SYS has
  329.               been correctly updated, your PM desktop should come up in the
  330.               resolution you have chosen.
  331.  
  332. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  333.  
  334. V.   General information about the Stealth VRAM OS/2 2.0 drivers
  335.  
  336.      The Stealth VRAM drivers in this release are 16-bit accelerated OS/2
  337.      2.0 display drivers and incorporate Seamless Windows support.  They
  338.      are modelled after IBM's 16-bit drivers for the 8514A.
  339.  
  340.      Remember, therefore, that IBM's advice to users of the 8514A
  341.      (in the OS/2 2.0 README file) also applies to you as a user of the Stealth
  342.      VRAM. In particular, DOS VIDEO SETTINGS affect Stealth VRAM performance
  343.      in Seamless and full-screen WINOS2 sessions.
  344.  
  345.      You should therefore access the system menu for the WINOS2 command prompt
  346.      (Click the right mouse button over the WINOS2 icon in the Command Prompts
  347.      window, select OPEN and then SETTINGS from the menu, select the SESSION tab
  348.      in the SETTINGS NOTEBOOK, and press the DOS (or WINOS2) SETTINGS button.
  349.      When the list box appears, scroll down to the VIDEO settings.) and turn
  350.      VIDEO_SWITCH_NOTIFICATION ON (if it is off).  Also be sure to turn
  351.      VIDEO_8514A_XGA_IO_TRAPPING OFF (default is ON) or screen performance
  352.      in WINOS2 sessions may be sluggish.
  353.  
  354.      If you have icons on the PM desktop for individual Windows applications,
  355.      you should perform the same settings on each of them as are recommended
  356.      for the WINOS2 command prompt.
  357.  
  358.      Keep in mind, too, that you should not attempt to switch from the full-screen
  359.      WINOS2 to the PM desktop while a Windows application is actively drawing
  360.      to the screen.  If you do so, you are likely to disrupt the video
  361.      synchronization of the WINOS2 desktop when you switch back.
  362.  
  363.      Finally, keep in mind that the Stealth VRAM drivers in this release do
  364.      not virtualize resolutions greater than 640x480 for DOS applications.
  365.      If you wish to run a high-resolution DOS application (other than Windows),
  366.      exit the application before you attempt to switch back to the PM desktop.
  367.  
  368. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  369.  
  370. VI.  Known problems
  371.  
  372.      Here are the known problems in release 1.0 of the Stealth VRAM OS/2 2.0
  373.      drivers.
  374.  
  375.      1. Problem:  In a full-screen WINOS2 session, if you attempt to switch
  376.           back to the Workplace Shell by double-clicking the PM desktop icon,
  377.           the switch will take a long time (under OS/2 2.0 GA) or it will
  378.           not happen at all (under the Service Pak).
  379.  
  380.         Work-around: To switch back to the Workplace Shell, use the keystroke
  381.           sequence <Alt>+<Esc>.
  382.  
  383.  
  384.      2. Problem: When WordPerfect 5.1 is installed on the Stealth VRAM it
  385.           incorrectly identifies the Stealth's S3 video chip as an ATI
  386.           video chip.  If you then switch from the WordPerfect
  387.           Print View (graphics-mode) screen to the PM desktop, the Print
  388.           View screen will be incorrectly restored when you attempt to
  389.           return to it.
  390.  
  391.         Work-around:  Go into WordPerfect's Setup function <Shift>+<F1>,
  392.           select DISPLAY, then GRAPHICS SCREEN TYPE, and select the
  393.           IBM VGA (& compatibles) option.
  394.  
  395.      3. Problem: When running a seamless Windows session under OS/2 2.0 GA
  396.           (i.e., WITHOUT the Service Pak), closing a Windows application
  397.           in the normal way--from the File menu, the System menu, or the
  398.           Close box--may leave it running in the background even though
  399.           it has disappeared from the screen.
  400.  
  401.         Work-around:  Close the application from the OS/2 PM Window List
  402.           instead of from the application's menus or Close box.
  403.           (Running the seamless Windows function under OS/2 2.0 GA is
  404.           NOT recommended!)
