Software Creations......
Dan Linton is the SYSOP of a board, Software Creations BBS,
which is touted as the "Home of the Authors." Among the shareware
authors who call it home are: Apogee, Id, Gamer's Edge, Epic
MegaGames, and others. One author that I did not mention, is the
SYSOP. Software Creations is the name of both his BBS and his
company.
Mr. Linton, in his own right, is an author to take notice of.
His first release was Picture Puzzle. As its name implies, it is an
electronic puzzle. However, the twist is that you can select the
sizes and shapes of the pieces from 4 to 1400. It can be fun for
youngsters, and still be a challenge to adults. One good thing is
that you do not have to worry about losing any pieces (unless the
computer deletes them!). It will utilize GIF, PCX and PUZ (Picture
Puzzle) files. On-line help shows you the completed puzzle, if you
wish, in a window while you are working on the puzzle. There is full
EGA and mouse support. In addition there is a sound option that will
play a song upon completion of the puzzle. As of this writing there
are over 70 puzzles available, with more always being added.
Teaming up with Jason Blochowiak, Dan Linton has released Trivia
Shell. This program was actually started beofre Puzzle, but was
placed on the back burners.
Trivia Shell is an interactive trivia game. Men, women and
children will find out things they did not know. To date there are
over 25 topics to choose from. When you register you can select from
two versions. The Classic contains 300 questions, while Deluxe
contains 600 trivia questions.
Trivia Shell is a great study aid, where you can study trivia on
presidents, Civil War, World War II, states of the union and many
other subjects. You can also test your knowledge of sports, TV, USA
and more. You can control almost every aspect of the game. Choose
how the game will be scored. What questions you will answer. How
many points you will receive. The amount of questions. As I
mentioned the subjects are varied, and are both entertaining and
challenging.
Not one to sit idle, Dan has been hard at work on several new
games. Hexxagon and JetPack have already been released, with Night
Raid due out shortly. I have distributed both of these programs, and
have received much praise for Mr. Linton.
Hexxagon is a board game. Simply it is an Othello-like game.
However, that is where the similarity ends. You must have more of
your color on the board to win. But, the way you achieve additional
pieces and capture your opponent is where you put on your thinking
cap. It is also where you start to have fun. Are you smarter the
computer? This is your chance to find out. The computer uses an
advanced genetic brain algorithm to calculate its moves.
JetPack is a futuristic Lode Runner. The object is to collect
all the gems on a level, and then proceed to the next level. You
must climb ladders, and escape your pursuers. Each level brings
different challenges. Using your jet pack you can fly over them. If
you think the game is not challenging enough, then use the built-in
editor to create your own levels.
Both these new releases support Sound Blaster, which adds to the
enjoyment on the game. However, as one person told me: "I enjoy
games that have sound. But, I do not want to be drowned in music or
sound effects. With these games there is sound, but it is not
overdone, and I enjoyed them."
Software Creations has become a player in the shareware market.
If these products are a preview of the future, it will be some
future for both Software Creations and Dan Linton.
Product Information
Various due to list of games. All are available FREE on first call to
