Word for Word Windows Edition v5.2
Word for Word Professional DOS v5.1
by Tony Curro
As a writer, many programs cross my desk. A word processor that I
like, can be surpassed by another I receive. Trying to keep all
these programs on my disk would require a huge drive, not to mention
an impossible way to keep track of letters sent out. Word for Word
is the answer for me.
I looked at the two products mentioned above. Both do the job in the
same fashion; they take a document in one format, and convert it to
another format. Graphics will not be converted.
Both products are easy to install, and even simpler to use. WFW
Windows requires 4,715KB for a full installation, while WFW Pro
requires 3,835KB. Both include a "Stamper" disk for those converting
to MAC format.
WFW Pro converts from/to over 90 formats, and WFW Windows will do
over 100 formats. Tag multiple files from different directories, or
drives, or use wildcards to convert many files in one session. I was
pleased with the speed and efficiency with which WFW converted
files. Even Headers and Footers are converted.
Both support Automatic Recognition, which can save you time when
tagging multiple documents in multiple formats. WFW will also retain
formatting and layout options during conversion. I converted a
document from Word for Windows to an ASCII file. Of course it cannot
convert in the same text as I had, but the document had the same
formatting, including header and footer. The footer has two lines,
neither of which had any spaces. This is a very small price to pay
for an otherwise perfect conversion.
WFW has built-in file viewers, that allow you to display your
document in actual format. WFW Windows evens allows you to view the
actual colors of text.
Not only does WFW convert documents, it will convert: spreadsheet,
database and mail merge files. I converted a DBF file into an ASCII
file, which resulted in three columns, one for each entry in my
database. You can convert these files into any other supported
format. So you can take a database file and turn it into a
spreadsheet file.
Both versions have two boxes: Source and Target. Click on the source
file or files, and then click or press one key to start the
conversion. Converting several pages seemed to take me seconds.
As of this writing, there is a newer version of Word for Word
Professional v5.2 for DOS. We have not seen this version yet.
However, the two versions that I did look at were truly excellent
products. I have switched word processors a few times. Had I not had
Word for Word, I would have had to load the letters in native
format, and then convert them to ASCII, and then load them into the
new word processor, and make the changes needed. Word for Word saved
me much time, and I was glad that I had the product.
