DJ560
If you are a proud Alinco Handi Owner, as I am, you need to know
about one of the inherant design flaws that the Alinco DJ-560 and
similar model hand-helds have. * First, DON'T take this as a slam
against a very good performing radio, but rather as an awareness of a
possible flaw that could shorten the life of the RF finals in these
fine radios.
Here is the potential problem:
IF, for any reason, you notice that the BNC connector for the antenna
begins to "TWIST" as if it is even the slightest bit loose, while you
install or remove the antenna or any other BNC connector, DO NOT CONTINUE
USE OF YOUR HAND-HELD UNTIL YOU HAVE IT REPAIRED. This is on accord of
the experience that the same has happened to myself. ---- THAT "twisting"
motion is only because the BNC connector has become loose from normal
use, BUT it has likely broken the connection of the center conductor
of the BNC antenna connector from the circuit card that the RF final
is mounted on. With an open connection, one can only imagine the
devastation that is rendered to the RF amp! The manufacturer did not
install any copper or silver type of SOLID conductor between the circuit
card and the center conductor of the BNC, but instead created the connection
by nothing more than constructing a build-up of solder to complete the gap
of about 1/32 to 3/64 of an inch of applied solder. The inherant looseness
that will inevitably occurr will tear the connection of solder from the
center conductor of the BNC connector, thus rendering a very high SWR for the
RF finals to realize. This is a very simple problem to repair, however a
very time consuming aspect of electronic "Micro-surgery". Unless you are
extremely adept in this type of repair, it is not recommended that YOU
attempt the repair yourself. Recommended is that you return the radio to
Alinco or any other AUTHORIZED repair facillity. I was lucky that I repaired
mine before any damage was incurred. Twenty two years of Micro-mini repair
experience tells me to pass this on to all...(..As the "fix-it man" says, pay
for it now, or really pay for it later....(vhf/uhf finals CAN be expensive))....
