  14.      Dedicated to: Scott Chesney (what, him again?) for his
  15.                    inspiration to finish this course. Scott
  16.                    believes that the cure for burn-out is to
  17.                    light a fire. He was right.

  35.      Now that the essentials are out of the way, I would like to
  36.    give out a little info about the tradition of the course. The
  37.    Scots have been at the business of golf since we have been at
  38.    business of screwing the Indians out of their land (maybe    
  39.    longer) and they are big on tradition. Witness the fact that
  40.    each and every bunker at St. Andrews has a name. Not even
  41.    Augusta does that and Augusta is known for its tradition. I
  42.    guess that's the difference between 140+ years and 60+.
  43.    So, here's some of the tradition of Carnoustie (note how 
  44.    much of it is due to American players).

  46.     Hole 2: Braird's bunker is the one in the fairway about
  47.             250 yards out. I have no idea who Braird was, but
  48.             he must have spent an inordinate amount of time
  49.             in the sand.
  50.     Hole 4: The name of this hole comes from those 2 large
  51.             mounds on the right about 50 yards out.
  52.     Hole 5: That bunker just to the left of the green is named
  53.             Hogan's Bunker after guess who? Seriously, in 1953
  54.             Ben Hogan won The Open at Carnoustie after 
  55.             "destroying" the course. Mr. Hogan is still held in
  56.             very high esteem by the locals.
  57.     Hole 6: The fairway is called "Hogan's Alley". Guess why.
  58.     Hole 9: That fairway bunker on the right at about 160 yards
  59.             from the pin is named Jack Nicklaus' Bunker. The 
  60.             next time you play with Jack, ask him why.è    Hole 10: There's a story behind the name of this hole and it
  61.              goes like this: it seems as if one of the members of
  62.              the club decided that his road to fortune was in 
  63.              Argentina as a golf pro. The other members threw a
  64.              going-away party and our hero quaffed one (or more)
  65.              too many. He wandered out to seek his fortune and
  66.              the tenth hole was as far as he got.
  67.     Hole 14: The name of this hole, "Spectacles" comes from the
  68.              pair of bunkers in the fairway about 70 yards in 
  69.              front of the green. I suppose they look like
  70.              spectacles to the Scots. To me they look like two
  71.              fairway bunkers.
  72.     Hole 18: The last bunker on the right is named Johnny  
  73.              Miller's Bunker and I don't think it's because
  74.              of anything good.
  75.       That's all of the trivia for now. Have fun and hit 'em
  76.       straight.
  77.          I welcome feedback of any kind on this or any of the
  78.        courses I've put out there. I do ask that you be specific
  79.        - telling me that a hole (or even an entire course) sucks
  80.        doesn't help much unless you specify how it sucks. But
  81.        hey, you've got the JNUG Designer, so feel free to make
  82.        the changes you feel are needed.
  83.          I also welcome suggestions as to courses that you want
  84.        to see done and this applies to types of trees that will
  85.        be appearing in future TREESn files.
