The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) is the highest authority on driving in Britain. Their advice is
sought and respected worldwide. The road safety principles that you learn should be at least to
the standard of the DSA Driving Test. You will need to pass this test to gain a full driving licence.
An instructor who teaches for money must be an officially approved instructor. A DSA ADI is a
Driving Standards Agency Approved Driving Instructor. These instructors have passed three stringent tests -
a Theory Test, a Driving Ability Test and a Test of Ability to Instruct. Currently, about only one in five
instructors who apply for these tests pass all three to become an approved and certified Driving Instructor.
A driving Instructor who is only partially qualified and still in training has a pink identity card.

The standard of instruction of all ADIs is regularly checked by the DSA. This is done by a DSA
Supervising Examiner sitting in on a live lesson. The instructor is then graded as follows:
Grade 4 is competent, Grade 5 is good , Grade 6 is a very high standard.
Ask any potential instructor for their grade before embarking on a course of lessons.
Dual controls are used - to prevent risk of injury to persons or property, to prevent an action that
would be illegal, to prevent excessive stress to the learner if difficult situations arose without warning,
and to prevent mechanical damage to the car.
The Code of Practice has been agreed with the driving instruction industry and covers instructors'
personal and professional conduct, advertising and their complaints procedure. For further information,
contact the DSA on telephone number 0115 901 2500.
Your instructor will check your eyesight before you start to drive. See Health Issues in Q3.
