  1. #WET  CONDITIONS
  2. Wet conditions give us the following considerations:
  3.  
  4.  - in low visibility due to dark clouds and overcast
  5.     sky use dipped headlights and a clean windscreen
  6.  - to combat low visibility due to water spray from
  7.     the road,  ensure the wipers are in good order
  8.  - to avoid aquaplaning due to water between the
  9.     tyres and the road,  reduce your speed
  10.  - roadside water pools can cause the car to swerve,
  11.     so where it is safe to do so drive around them
  12.  - for flooded roads find alternative routes otherwise
  13.     test the water depth and drive slowly through them
  14.

  17. WET  ROAD  CONDITIONS

  19. Even a light shower on a dry road can cause quite a
  20. degree of slipperiness, requiring light steering and
  21. softer braking.

  27. Your brakes are damp and unresponsive so a certain
  28. amount of aquaplaning may make the steering lighter.

  32. HEAVY  ROADSIDE  PUDDLES

  36. Beside the road ahead are pools of water that have
  37. not yet drained away. They are a driving hazard. When
  38. you pass them you will notice they affect the steering.

  47. CROSSING  A  SWOLLEN  FORD

  49. section of road with excess amount of surface water.
  50. Ahead is a ford, a dip in the road that allows a stream
  51. to pass.  But this ford is swollen and you should pass
  52. through it with care as there may be floating debris.

  56. drive slowly and steadily across the ford without
  57. stopping.  You will be asked to TEST YOUR BRAKES

  76. #FOG  BOUND  CONDITIONS
  77. Fog is one of the most dangerous weather conditions.
  78. Fog itself doesn't claim lives, the standard of driving
  79. in fog does. Here are some issues to consider:
  80.  
  81.  - fog is a strain on the eyes and frustrating to drive in
  82.  - fog reduces your ability to anticipate events ahead
  83.  - often vehicles will follow each other far too closely
  84.  - an accident involving one car soon involves many
  85.  - slow down and check the speedometer regularly
  86.  - use dipped headlights and the fog lights in daytime
  87.  - turn fog lights on if visibility is 100 metres or less
  88.

  92. FOG  ON  THE  ROAD
  93. Our first session is just to experience what it can be
  94. like to drive in foggy road conditions. We find it is
  95. necessary to keep our speed down in order to help us
  96. stay in control and give us time to adjust the speed
  97. and direction of the car should any hazard appear
  98. suddenly out of the fog.

  107. FOLLOWING IN THE FOG
  108. In the next session you will follow a car in the fog.
  109. You do not know if they will be braking, accelerating,
  110. turning off or parking beside the road and so you will
  111. need to be extra vigilant.

  113. This session stresses the difficulty of being able to do
  114. any genuine anticipating of events ahead due to having
  115. a severely limited visibility because of dense fog.

  122. HAZARDS  IN  THE  FOG
  123.  
  124. In this final session the car in front will unfortunately
  125. give you no warning and little time to respond to what
  126. it does.  This type of event can easily occur in foggy
  127. conditions.

  141. the road user when visibility is severely impaired by
  142. dense fog.

  151. #SLIPPERY  CONDITIONS
  152. Water, snow, ice and gravel can make roads slippery
  153. even to tyres in perfect condition. Here are some of
  154. the issues concerning icy roads:
  155.  
  156.  - be very gentle on the brakes and steering, control
  157.    the car smoothly and drive slowly when on ice
  158.  - use the highest gear sustainable for the speed as
  159.    the lowest gears may well cause wheel spin
  160.  - braking distances on ice can become ten - fold
  161.  - skids are more likely when braking and accelerating
  162.  - if the back steps out, always steer into the swing
  163.     to straighten up the car body's direction
  164.

  167. THE  ICY  ROAD
  168.  
  169. Before you is a wintry scene in which the country
  170. roads have received very little gritting and are icy.

  172. INSTRUCTIONS

  174. preferably at a low speed. You are encouraged to find
  175. out how light the steering and braking is by trying to
  176. drive at a speed greater than 10 mph.

  182. LOSING  TYRE  GRIP
  183. If the wheels totally lose their grip when on an icy
  184. road the car may begin to turn whilst still moving
  185. forward. There is a definite answer to this problem.

  187. If the rear of the car 'steps out' towards your right
  188. then steer towards the right,  until the car body
  189. straightens up again. Likewise for a left rotation.
  190.

  197. PASSING  HAZARDS

  199. In this last session you will face a few hazards and will
  200. need to remember to compensate for your lack of
  201. braking and steering on this icy road.

  205. follow the car in front. Overtake the car when it parks
  206. beside the road, and then continue along the road
  207. until you come to a T-junction.

  215. In this section we experienced the light braking and
  216. light steering effects of driving on very slippery ice.

  223. funnels and hazards such as fallen trees.
