  5. Executive Summary
  6.  
  7. WordPerfect Corporation has always had a policy of responding to
  8. customer needs between major product upgrades with interim
  9. releases.  In keeping with this customer- oriented focus,
  10. WordPerfect will ship an interim release of WordPerfect for
  11. Windows, version 6.0a, in March 1994. The four major objectives
  12. for WordPerfect 6.0a are reliability, speed, ease of use and
  13. transition tools.  
  14.  
  15. WordPerfect 6.0a for Windows will be available free of charge to
  16. all registered users of WPWin 6.0 upon request.  If users have
  17. not registered their software, WordPerfect representatives can
  18. register them when they call (800) 321-4566.   
  19.  
  20. Enhancements:
  21.  
  22. *    Speed-  Speed improvements have been made in the following
  23.      areas:  basic formatting, scrolling, printing, graphics
  24.      handling, table manipulation and editing, importing 5.x
  25.      documents, generate, document compare, outline, launching
  26.      WPDraw, automation of ExpressDocs Templates and opening
  27.      large documents.

  29. *    Reliability-  Many changes have been made to improve the
  30.      overall reliability of the product. Every effort was made to
  31.      address the issues raised by our customers.   
  32.      
  33. *    Printing-  With the Windows or WordPerfect (*.PRS) printer
  34.      drivers, the printing of tables, borders, and bitmap
  35.      graphics is much faster. In addition, with
  36.      WordPerfect-supplied Postscript and Hewlett Packard printer
  37.      drivers, WPWin 6.0 printed ATM and TrueType fonts as
  38.      graphics, which caused large output file sizes and long
  39.      total print times. WPWin 6.0a now downloads ATM and TrueType
  40.      fonts to these printers, improving overall printing speed.  
  41.  
  42. *    Integration-  WPWin 6.0a now works better under Windows NT
  43.      and OS/2, including seamless integration with the OS/2
  44.      Advanced Workplace Shell. The OS/2 Integration Tools Disk is
  45.      available separately by calling (800) 321-4566. 
  46.  
  47. *    Conversion of Fonts-  In WPWin 6.0, converting WordPerfect
  48.      5.x documents to the WordPerfect 6.0 format would sometimes
  49.      result in fonts not converting correctly. Fonts will now
  50.      convert correctly if the same printer is selected in WP 5.x
  51.      and WPWin 6.0a. In addition, round-trip compatibility from
  52.      6.0 to 5.2 and back to a 6.0 format will result in
  53.      accurate font matching.
  54.  
  55. *    Fonts-  The last four fonts used are now displayed at the
  56.      top of the font list, accessed by clicking the font button
  57.      on the Power Bar. This is similar to the existing capability
  58.      to display the names of the four most recently used files on
  59.      the Files pull-down menu.
  60.  
  61. *    Graphics- You can now easily save a graphic as a WPG, PCX,
  62.      TIFF, and BMP file from within WPWin 6.0a by selecting the
  63.      graphic and choosing Save As from      the File menu.  
  64.  
  65. *    Full WYSIWYG Display-  Character widths are now displayed
  66.      more accurately on screen, resulting in a truer graphical
  67.      representation of fonts. 
  68.  
  69. *    WPDraw-  With some scanners, the error message "Scan
  70.      Operation Failed..." would appear and prevent an image from
  71.      scanning directly into WPDraw. This has now been corrected.
  72.  
  73. *    256 Color Driver-  If a problem is detected with a 256 color
  74.      driver, WPWin 6.0a will advise you to add a /fl startup
  75.      switch (for example, c:\wpwin60\wpwin.exe /fl) to the
  76.      command line under Properties for the WPWin 6.0a icon. This
  77.      will eliminate known problems with certain video drivers.

  79. *    DDEML.DLL-  We are aware of conflicts with a Windows file,
  80.      DDEML.DLL, dated 4/22/92. The correct version of this file
  81.      should be found in the System directory (c:\window\system).
  82.      If the version of this file (DDEML.DLL, 4/22/92) is     
  83.      found in the Windows directory, and the correct version is
  84.      found in the Windows System directory, the file will be
  85.      automatically deleted from the Windows directory.

  87. Additions:
  88.  
  89. *    QuickCorrect-  This feature automatically replaces errors in
  90.      mistyped or misspelled words. For instance, if you
  91.      accidentally type adn, it is automatically replaced with and 
  92.      as soon as you press the space bar or another word delimiter
  93.      (comma, period, semi-colon, etc.). QuickCorrect can
  94.      automatically fix hundreds of  commonly mistyped or misspelled
  95.      words as you type. QuickCorrect can also automatically expand
  96.      abbreviations on the fly.  For example, you could type  wpc
  97.      and have  WordPerfect Corporation  appear as you press the
  98.      space bar. QuickCorrect will also fix two initial caps such as
  99.      WOrdPerfect.
  100.  
  101. *    QuickSelect-  WordPerfect 6.0a understands that you need the
  102.      ability to select complete words, sentences, and paragraphs as
  103.      well as individual letters. QuickSelect gives you the
  104.      flexibility to select precisely the text you need. Click
  105.      twice, holding the mouse down the second time, then drag to
  106.      select word by word. Click three times and drag to select
  107.      sentence by sentence, and click four times and drag to select
  108.      paragraph by paragraph. In addition, WordPerfect 6.0 has
  109.      always let you click in the left margin to select a
  110.      sentence,and double click to select a paragraph, or use the
  111.      right mouse button in the left margin for more QuickSelect
  112.      options.

  114. *    QuickStart-  Coach When you first launch WordPerfect 6.0a, an
  115.      interactive QuickStart Coach appears to give you an overview
  116.      of the product. This will assist WordPerfect for DOS users, as
  117.      well as users of other word processors such as Microsoft Word
  118.      and Ami Pro as they make the transition to WordPerfect for
  119.      Windows.

  121. *    Transition Advisor-  Accessed from the Help menu, the
  122.      Transition Advisor helps WordPerfect DOS users make a smooth
  123.      the transition to Windows. The Transition Advisor displays
  124.      keystrokes and commands from WordPerfect 5.1 for  DOS and then
  125.      shows how to perform the equivalent tasks in WordPerfect 6.0a
  126.      for Windows. Also available is a WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS
  127.      keyboard that retains familiar keystrokes as you work.

  129. *    ExpressDocs templates-  WPWin 6.0a will ship with a WPLite
  130.      template which provides a scaled-down menu and feature list.
  131.      WPWin 6.0a will include several other templates: WPAmiPro,
  132.      business card creation, workgroup, pleading, term paper, and
  133.      an additional form letter template.
  134.  
  135. *    Pleading template-  To answer requests from the legal
  136.      community, a pleading macro (PLEADING.WCM) and a pleading
  137.      template (PLEADING.WPT) will ship with WPWin 6.0a. This
  138.      automated template guides you through creating a pleading
  139.      document. 
  140.  
  141. *    Save-  A "fail safe" save option will now save the document
  142.      twice, check the file date/time, and then report any possible
  143.      problems.
  144.  
  145. *    Uninstall-  The setup program includes an Uninstall
  146.      facilitywhich allows for a standard or custom uninstall of
  147.      WPWin 6.0a. Improvements have also been made to the
  148.      installation routine.
  149.  
  150. *    Paragraph Numbers-  Paragraph numbering is now equivalent to
  151.      the functionality found in WPWin 5.2 and is part of the Bullet
  152.      and Numbers feature. 
  153.      
  154. *    Tables-  You can now save table data to the clipboard with
  155.      tabs that allow you to read data into a spreadsheet or save it
  156.      as an ASCII file. In addition, you can save table data to a 
  157.      Quattro Pro format.
  158.  
  159. *    Import/Export-  A conversion for Professional Write files has
  160.      been added, as well as ODBC support, which provides direct
  161.      support for Microsoft Access and Excel 5.0.
  162.  
  163. *    New Button Bars-  Three new Button Bars have been added to
  164.      WPWin 6.0a: Design Tools, Utilities, and Legal.
  165.  
  166. *    Network Users-  WPWin 6.0a includes UNC (universal naming
  167.      convention) support as well as shareable paper size forms for
  168.      Windows drivers. 
  169.  
  170. *    Encryption-  Password protection has been improved, with
  171.      support for both the old and new formats for compatibility
  172.      with existing WPWin users and documents, as well as 
  173.      "case-sensitive" password protection.
