  11. When sorting by line, the Sort feature does not alphabetize as
  12. you expect.  If lines contain an inconsistent number of Tab codes
  13. and fields, the sorting will not be consistent.

  15. Concept
  16. In Line Sort, each line of text can be divided into fields.  A
  17. Tab or Indent marks a field boundary.  Each field can be divided
  18. into words, which are separated by spaces.  To sort by fields in
  19. a line, you must have the same number of Tabs or Indents on each
  20. line.

  22. For example, if you have created lines of text with two columns
  23. of information (name and phone number), you may have more than
  24. one Tab code between columns.  The lines might appear in Reveal
  25. Codes as in the following example:

  27. John Doe[Tab][Tab][Tab]555-1234[HRt]
  28. Dolly Madison[Tab][Tab]555-3456[HRt]
  29. George Washington[Tab]555-5678[HRt]

  31. In this example, there are four fields in the first line but only
  32. two fields in the third line.  In the first line, field 1
  33. contains the name, fields 2 and 3 are empty because there is no
  34. text between the Tabs, and field 4 contains the phone number.  To
  35. sort the lines correctly, you must have only one Tab between the
  36. name and the phone number, as in the following example.

  42. You should set tab stops for the document so that you only need
  43. one Tab or Indent between columns.  An example of how to do this
  44. is given below.  An example of sorting by lines is also given
  45. below.

  47. Solution
  48. Set the tab stops for your document before typing the list to be
  49. sorted.
  50.      1    Press Shift-F8, 1, then 8.
  51.      2    Press Ctrl-End.
  52.      3    Type a position number for the tab (such as 3i), then
  53.           press Enter.
  54.      4    Press F7, then F7 to return to the document.
  55. Define a Line Sort to sort by Field 2 (phone number).
  56.      1    Press Ctrl-F9, 2, then press Enter twice.
  57.      2    Type 3 (Keys), n (Numeric), then 2 (field 2).
  58.      3    Press F7, then type 1 (Perform).
