Title: Character Set Tables
Product: WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS
Number: 1002-10/93
Problem
You want to use a character such as , , or Æ, but you don't
know where to find it or how to place it in your document.
Concept
There are two types of WordPerfect Character Sets in WordPerfect
5.1: the ASCII characters, and the Compose characters.
The ASCII characters are found in Appendix A: ASCII Conversion
Chart of your reference manual. You enter them into your
document by holding down the Alt key and using the number keypad
on your keyboard.
Character Set tables containing all the available WordPerfect
characters are found in Appendix P: WordPerfect Characters in the
reference manual. The sets are numbered from 0■11, and set 12 is
a user-defined set. All of the ASCII characters are found in the
character sets in Appendix P. When you insert a character into a
document using the Compose feature, you must specify the
character by number. The format for these numbers is 1,23, where
1 means character set 1, and 23 means character number 23 in that
character set.
Not all characters in the Character Sets can appear on the normal
editing screen. Some are represented by a small, square box ■.
Not all printers can print all characters, either. Refer to
Appendix P of your manual to find out about your specific
printer.
Solution
Use one of these two methods to place a WordPerfect character in
your document.
ASCII Characters
Look through Appendix A to find the character you want to use.
For this example, place the smiley face () in your document.
1 Hold down the Alt key and use your keypad to type 1.
The number must be entered on the keypad■you cannot use the
numbers at the top of the keyboard.
Compose Characters
To find the character number using the Character Set tables:
1 Using Appendix P: WordPerfect Characters in the reference
manual, find the character you want to use.
2 Note the bolded number at the left of the row containing the
character (such as 30).
3 Note the bolded number above the column which includes the
character (for example, 11).
4 Add the two numbers (30 + 11 = 41) to find the character
number.
Now use the Compose feature to print the trademark character (■):
1 Press Compose (Ctrl+V).
2 Type 4,41 and then press Enter.
This character is in character set 4; the number to the left of
the row is 30, and the number above the character is 11 (notice
that the number 41 is calculated by adding 30 and 11).
