IMPORTANT: INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS!!
To enjoy the reports in the archive TMLN4WN.ZIP,
unarchive the ZIP file to a directory of your choice. These
documents are designed to be viewed and printed with REPLICA,
a state of the art document viewing and printing system for
Windows that a) eliminates the need to own any Windows word
processor; and b) preserves most of the formatting, design and
graphics which were part of the original document. Understand
that REPLICA is not a word processor: text is locked and you cannot
edit or change anything although you can cut/copy and paste using
the Windows clipboard and print as well.
FIRST, unarchive TMLN4WN.zip to a directory of choice. A
sensible name for such a directory would be \timeline. Then start
Windows if you have not already done so. Open up the directory
tree display and display the file list window for \timeline
YOU MUST FIRST START REPLICA ITSELF WHICH IS EMBEDDED IN THE
FILE TL4DOC.EXE. YOU MUST BEGIN WITH TL4DOC.EXE AS REPLICA
IS NOT CONTAINED IN ANY OF THE OTHER FILES IN THIS ARCHIVE.
If you attempt to view .rpl files in any other text viewer or word
processsor they either will not open or you will view a great deal
of garbage on screen and a total loss of formatting and design.
SIMPLY DOUBLE CLICK ON THE ICON FOR TL4DOC.EXE IN THE FILE LISTING
OF THE /TIMELINE DIRECTORY DISPLAY. THAT IS ALL THERE IS TO IT!
REPLICA will start and display the file tl4doc.repl which is embedded
in the file tl4doc.exe. You may now view each of the documents that
comprise TIMELINE V4.0 for Windows by opening each within REPLICA as you
would any file from the File Menu. REMEMBER THAT EACH DOCUMENT HAS THE
EXTENSION .RPL NOT .DOC.
You may, of course, set up a program item within a group of
your choice for tl4doc.exe as you would for any executable. You can
print any range of pages, or an entire .rpl document, as you would with
any Windows application by using Print Setup and Print in the usual
manner. There is on-line Help on the menu bar of REPLICA if you lose your
way. I strongly recommend that you take a few minutes and read the on-line
help with REPLICA so that you can orient yourself about viewing,
selecting text or graphics for cut and past clipboard operations, and
printing.
ORIGINS OF MYTHOLOGY
There are six files in the shareware archive of TIMELINE and I
recommend that you read them in this order: readme.1st (ASCII-this file);
tl4doc.exe; readme.rpl, tmln4sh.rpl, sonsgd.rpl and regist.rpl. YOU MUST
START WITH TL4DOC.EXE AS EXPLAINED ABOVE IN ORDER TO INSTALL THE REPLICA
VIEWING SYSTEM. Readme.rpl will give you some general background and
introduce Reality Software. Tmln4sh.rpl is the shareware preview of the
historical timeline and sonsgd.rpl is a complete report about a matter that
captured my interest. Regist.rpl is a registration form should you wish to
acquire the complete 57 page timeline.. In the registered version of
TIMELINE V4.0 for Windows which is not archived, the file tmln4.rpl is the
complete timeline.
ABOUT REPLICA
REPLICA does not preserve the original margins of most documents
in that the right and left margins on the REPLICA viewing screen are
usually wider than on the original document when it is viewed with the word
processor or spreadsheet program that created it. If you find the font size
displayed by REPLICA to be smaller than you wish, check to see that your
video mode is 640 x 480. Such a resolution will correct most readablity
problems. REPLICA is very machine intensive. I doubt it will run on a 286
and performance will be slow on a 386SX. REGISTERED USERS PLEASE NOTE:
THE PROCESSING DEMANDS UPON REPLICA TO LOAD AND DISPLAY THE COMPLETE
57 PAGE TIMELINE ARE ENORMOUS. IN ORDER TO AVOID SERIOUS COLOR
DISTORTION WHICH WILL MAKE READING VERY DIFFICULT, FOLLOW THESE
SUGGESTIONS EVEN IF YOU OWN A HIGH END 486 OR A PENTIUM. CLOSE OUT
WALLPAPER, SCREEN SAVERS AND ALL OTHER PROGRAMS IN ORDER TO MAXIMIZE
AVAILABLE WINDOWS RESOURCES. PREFERABLY DO NOT RUN A THIRD PARTY SHELL
SUCH AS THE NORTON DESKTOP FOR WINDOWS. DO NOT LOAD THE TIMELINE A
SECOND TIME WITHIN A SINGLE WINDOWS SESSION. RESTART WINDOWS IN ORDER TO
CLEAR THE BUFFERS. IF YOU FOLLOW THIS PROCEDURE THE COLORS IN THE TIMELINE,
WHICH WERE CAREFULLY CHOSEN FOR MAXIMUM READABILITY, WILL NOT
BE CHANGED. If shareware users view what seems to be an odd color palette
that does not allow for easy reading, follow these same procedures: close
out all unnecessary programs and restart Windows. Depending upon your work
in Windows prior to using Replica, even small .rpl files may load with
severe color distortion.
Understand that this is the first commercial release of REPLICA and
the programming challenge was formidable! If you don't believe it, ask your
friendly neigborhood Windows programmer. Reflect that no cross application
document viewing system was available for Windows until late fall '93 even
though the need was apparent years ago. Play with the buttons on the tool
bar, drop the View menu and notice the many choices there. ABOVE ALL,
READ THE ON-LINE HELP! Enjoy the presentation and reflect that you now can
explore state-of-the-art document viewing for Windows. I welcome any and
all comments, criticisms and suggestions: see addresses on the registration
form. Please note the large size of this shareware archive and realize that
.exe and .rpl files do not undergo much compression by PKZIP: the total size
of all files in this archive is about 1.32Meg. Be certain you have adequate
space on your drive to hold these files and for ease of use they should all
be put in the same directory. The registered version of TIMELINE V4.0 for
Windows is only available on a high density 3 1/2" disk.
The shareware version of REPLICA is embedded within tl4doc.exe
and includes an extensive Help file. You may view an unlimited number
of REPLICA documents (.rpl) but you can only create 5 (five) REPLICA
document files of your own. Registration of REPLICA is required if
you wish to create an unlimited number of .rpl files from your
own documents. See About ... on the Help menu. Reality Software does not
sell REPLICA: you must contact Farallon Software directly. If you are
interested in document publishing for Windows I highly recommend REPLICA.
