  3.                                GET SOME FILES

  6.             One of the primary reasons for a user calling a board
  7.             is  to download shareware files to his own system for
  8.             his/her own private use.  There are millions of files
  9.             no doubt to be downloaded....but you  DON'T  have  to
  10.             have all 6 million available on your board.
  11.  
  12.             There  is  nothing so overwhelming as to call a board
  13.             and be presented with a file menu that has  literally
  14.             a  million  files on it!  Most of these files are way
  15.             old and outdated and are of no  real  use  to  anyone
  16.             except  to  pad  the  ego of some maniachal sysop who
  17.             wants to have the  BEST  most  complete  BBS  on  the
  18.             planet or the entire solar system for that matter.

  20.             What  I have to say about that matter (I think I have
  21.             already said - but to restate it) : it only takes one
  22.             quick keystroke to delete their  calling  information
  23.             from my Dialing Directory .... which I do quite often
  24.             these days.

  26.             What  I offer on my board is one CD-ROM full of about
  27.             6500 file, plus about 1000 of my own  which  gives  a
  28.             grand total of 7500 files.   That is MORE THAN ENOUGH
  29.             for  a  user  to  take the time to browse through.  I
  30.             alternate CDs at time, but only have ONE on-line at a
  31.             time.  Especially, if you want to have  a  speciality
  32.             board,  where  most  of  the  files are in only a few
  33.             categories....don't drive your users away by offering
  34.             too much.

  36.             Not  only  will  too many files drive users away...it
  37.             will also discourage would be sysops from setting  up
  38.             boards.   "What's  the  use"  they will say, "I can't
  39.             possible  compete!"    Don't  quit  before  you   get
  40.             started:   the  smaller  boards  will  be the ones to
  41.             outlast the larger ones!  (My prediction!)

  44.             Restricting  file  areas  is  your  prerogative,  and
  45.             something that needs to  be done, especially  if  you
  46.             offer  adult  files.   There is also a TEEN file area
  47.             that adults are not allowed into on my board.  All of
  48.             the restricting depends on the nature of  the  files,
  49.             and the nature of the user.
