WHAT IS ONE-LINER?
One-Liner is a TSR utility that allows you to capture text off
the screen of most DOS text based programs. The captured text may
be added to a list of One-Liners, you may search the file for a
match to the captured text, or you may manually mark a section of
the screen (a single line) to be added to the file. You may mark
as many lines off the screen as desired.
After One-Liner has been popped-up, you will be in the editor. It
is a full screen styled editor with line insert, delete, Home,
End etc., all the normal keys. You may type text on a line as
well as capturing it off the 'Screen'.
Comments may be added to a line by using two "//" forward
slashes. Any text after the comment mark will be ignored by
AUTO-TYPE.
You may embed carriage returns in the text by using the vertical
bar symbol "|" on the keyboard.
Why is this necessary? Because One-Liner will return text to the
program you are running. So you may store one line E-Mail
addresses, Tag-Lines for E-Mail, keyboard macros for Programming,
DOS commands that you use often.
Here are some examples:
E-Mail address > g.newberry@genie.geis.com
Same with comment> g.newberry@genie.geis.com // Internet Addr
DOS command > dir c:\word\docs\bill\*.ltr /od //Files
As a programming macro:
Select Case| Case 1| Case 2| Case Else|End Select // Macro
(note - the // indicates a comment follows.)
Produces this:
Select Case
Case 1
Case 2
Case Else
End Select
You can just fill in the blanks.
Aladdin and Tapcis users can create oneline macros to send E-Mail
through the Internet complete with subject, CC, Filenames etc.
One-Liner can steal information from one program and use it in
another.
DATA ENTRY
Store common phrases or information that can be used during Data
Entry into a program. There are unlimited uses for One-Liner.
Only your imagination will be the limit.
ONE-Liner(tm) 3 (c)1994 NCS Software
TSR COMPATIBILITY
Every attempt has been made to insure compatibility with other
programs. But one thing is for sure. TSR's don't really like
other TSR's! If you install several TSR's, you must un-install
them in the reverse order. Always check for compatibility with
other TSR's before using ONE-Liner extensively.
ONE-Liner has been tested under DOS, Windows 3.1, and OS/2 2.1.
Remember Software Caches, Printer Buffers, and some Virus
software run as TSR's.
ONE-Liner(tm) 4 (c)1994 NCS Software
INSTALLATION
Installation of ONE-Liner is painless. If you are reading this
you have at least un-compressed ONE-Liner. All that is left is
configuration. ONE-Liner creates a swap file on your Hard Drive.
The default is 'C:\'. If you wish to change the drive location,
follow these steps.
1) Change to the directory where ONE-Liner is located.
2) Run the configuration program by typing ONECONF <ENTER>
3) Follow instruction on screen and select the default drive.
4) You are done!
DATA FILES
ONE-Liner creates a file called ONELINE.DAT. The default location
is the same location as the swap file. The default will be
C:\ONELINE.DAT. If you change your swapfile location, the data
file location will change to there.
By default, each time ONE-Liner is started it locates the file in
the default location. If you have a data file that you want to
keep separate from the default, you may start One-Liner with the
'/Ignore' option like this:
C:\>ONELINE /Ignore <ENTER>
This tells One-Liner to use the current directory as the location
for the data file. If there isn't a data file in the current
directory, a new one will be created. Just make sure you start
ONE-Liner after you switch to the new directory where you intend
to work.
To start ONE-Liner(tm) just type ONELINE and press <ENTER> from
the DOS prompt. It will install itself and wait.
ONE-Liner(tm) 5 (c)1994 NCS Software
ACTIVATING ONE-LINER
After you start ONE-Liner it waits for you to press a HOT-KEY to
activate it. The HOT-KEY is Ctrl+Alt. Press the CTRL key, hold
it, and then press the ALT key. It will then popup for use.
UN-INSTALLING ONE-LINER
You should never un-install ONE-Liner if you are using it over
the top of another program. Always wait until you return to the
DOS prompt to un-install ONE-Liner. REMEMBER TO UN-INSTALL TSR'S
IN THE REVERSE ORDER OF THEIR INSTALLATION!
When you are ready to un-install ONE-Liner, Popup the Editor,
press F10 to un-install, and select 'YES'. When you exit
ONE-Liner it will un-install itself. You will have to run
ONE-Liner again to use it after un-installing it.
ONE-Liner(tm) 6 (c)1994 NCS Software
USING ONE-LINER
Using ONE-Liner will be easy to learn. There are only a few
commands to remember. There are a few things to be aware of. So
follow along closely.
A WORD ABOUT THE CURSOR
Even when you can't see the cursor, it is located on the screen
SOMEWHERE! Many times it may be invisible, but it is there. It is
important to keep this in mind during use, as it's operation is
affected by the cursor location when you invoke ONE-Liner.
SEARCHING
When you activate One-Liner it uses the current position of the
cursor to determine what to copy off the screen. ONE-Liner reads
from the current cursor position to the right edge of the screen.
This is examined for text. If any text is found, then it is
captured for you. This is an important concept! Lets say you are
sending someone E-Mail. You can't remember their entire E-Mail
address, so here is what you can do with One-Liner:
Enter Address: Gary < Type this in
^ < Position the cursor back under 'G'
Now press CTRL+ALT to activate ONE-Liner. One-Liner will copy
'Gary' off the screen and present you with these options.
+-ESC=Abort to Editor--------+
|(A)dd/(S)earch/(M)ark "Gary"|
+----------------------------+
Press 'S' for search and ONE-Liner will search for anything to
match Gary. Upper or lower case doesn't matter. If a match is
found you will be placed on that line. If you want to try for
another match, press ALT+N for next match. Once you have found
the line you want, press CTRL+ENTER and ONE-Liner will use
AUTO-TYPE to send the text to the address field in your E-Mail
program.
If you don't want to do a search with text captured off the
screen, you are not required to type any text into your program
before activating ONE-Liner. You may activate ONE-Liner and press
ESC when you see the above box. This will put you in the editor
and you may select the line you want, or do a search from the
Editor.
ADDING
If you want to pick some text off the screen, you may either
position the cursor under the beginning character of the text you
want and activate ONE-Liner, or use the (M)ark feature. If you
position the cursor where you want first, just use the (A)dd
feature to add the captured text into the ONE-Liner file. IF the
text you want
doesn't come up, or it's in a place on the screen you cannot get
to, you can use the (M)ark feature to capture select text from
the screen.
ONE-Liner(tm) 7 (c)1994 NCS Software
MARKING
When you see the above selection box press 'M' to mark. You will
see your original program screen. The cursor will appear in the
TOP LEFT corner of the screen. Move the cursor to the beginning
character you want to mark. Press the 'S' key to start marking.
Now moving to the right, place the cursor on the last letter you
want and press 'E' for end. Always mark from left to right. After
you press 'E' you will see the above box again, this time with
the 'marked' text.
*Note* If you want to mark another section of the screen before
entering the editor, press 'M' again and the text you just
selected will be added to the file and you will be put into the
marking mode again. When you have marked your last line, press
(A)dd and you will be put in the Editor. All new added text is
placed at the bottom of the file. You may sort the file by
pressing F2.
AUTO-TYPE
Now the real power of ONE-Liner. You can have ONE-Liner send the
text that you've selected in the editor back into your program.
It 'TYPES' it in for you automatically. You must be aware of
several things. We will look at them one at a time.
ABORTING ONE-LINER
If you have added or changed things in ONE-Liner and you don't
want to save any changes, just press the ESC key. Nothing will be
changed, and AUTO-TYPE will not work.
SAVE FILE & NO AUTO-TYPE
Lets say you have added, marked and added, and edited some of the
text in ONE-Liner. You want to save the information, but you
don't want AUTO-TYPE to return any text to your program. Press
ALT+X. It saves, but does not invoke AUTO-TYPE.
SAVE FILE WITH AUTO-TYPE
If you have added, or even if you haven't, you must select the
line you want and then press CTRL+ENTER for AUTO-TYPE to work.
Read below for possible problems.
AUTO-TYPE AND EDITORS
If you are using a Text based word processor, Programming editor,
or typing a E-Mail letter, AUTO-TYPE works well. The one
consideration is the insert mode of the editor. If you have
insert mode on, AUTO-TYPE will insert the text starting at the
cursor location that was last used when you invoked ONE-Liner.
Set the cursor BEFORE activating ONE-Liner. If you are in the
overwrite mode, AUTO-TYPE will overwrite your text. Check this.
AUTO-TYPE AND DATA ENTRY FIELDS
AUTO-TYPE works well with most data entry fields that require you
to press the <ENTER> key when you are done typing in text. If you
use ONE-Liner to create a data entry macro, you must be careful
of data input fields that automatically move to the next data
field when they reach a certain number of characters. ONE-Liner
ONE-Liner(tm) 8 (c)1994 NCS Software
can be used to fill in forms with default information if you know
the EXACT key-presses needed.
AUTO-TYPE AND SINGLE HOT-KEY PROGRAMS
You should NEVER use AUTO-TYPE (return text) to a program that
works by Hot-Keys. What do I mean by hot keys? Any program that
displays ascreen and then waits for you to press a single key to
activate a feature, is a program to watch out for. Here is why.
Lets say you have a program that works like this:
Press 'F' < Programs goes to Files
Press 'O' < Program selects orders
Press 'R' < Program selects range
Press 'D' < Program selects Delete all
Now if AUTO-TYPE returned the line 'Fords are great', guess what
the program does. One at a time it uses each letter just like a
key stroke. 'F', 'O', 'R', 'D'. Delete what? I'd rather not find
out! Be careful with this type of program. You can create macros
if you know the exact key-strokes, but be careful!
COMMENTS
You may add a comment to any line in the editor by adding '//'
double forward slashes, then the comment. Anything from the
forward slashes on is ignored by AUTO-TYPE. You will have a
comment, but it is ignored when selected. A must for macros or
E-Mail addresses.
EMBEDDED CARRIAGE RETURNS
Embedded returns are very handy for creating a macro. Anyplace
you want AUTO-TYPE to 'press Enter' for you, use the vertical
bar. '|' On most PC keyboards it is next to the Backspace key.
Here is how it works. Assume you want a little header like this:
Greg Newberry
NCS Software
CIS: 71022,2300
Here is the macro to do that:
Greg Newberry|NCS Software|CIS: 71022,2300| // Header for Me
^^ comment mark
Handy for headers or footers in Notes, Memos, etc.
MACROS FOR PROGRAMMERS
You can use ONE-Liner with embedded CR's to create simple macros
for often used programming structures. DO-While loops, CASE
SELECT, ETC. Little one-line code tidbits that you use all the
time. Use your imagination.
TIPS FOR ALADDIN USERS
USE THIS FOR INTERNET ADDRESSES! Really Aladdin won't store very
long addresses, so you can store all you Internet addresses in
ONE-Liner. If you send e-mail to the same person often, you can
ONE-Liner(tm) 9 (c)1994 NCS Software
create a Macro to fill in your address, Carbon copy, Subject,
File, and your Greetings.
Like this:
Address:(start macro with cursor here in Aladdin Mail)
cc:^(cursor here to start)
subject:
file:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Hi John,
>(start text)
Here is the macro:
john.doe@aol.com||Whats New!||Hi John,|| // Aladdin Macro
Ok, the address is placed, then a CR, a CR for carbon copy, then
the subject and a CR, a CR for file, the greeting and a CR, and
another CR to get you to the body of your text. Of course the
comment helps.
TAG-LINES
Ever see a tagline on E-mail you couldn't get to and had to write
it down? Well now you can grab it, and send it back to someone
else. Tag-line stealing is a national E-Mail sport!
PROGRAM EDITORS, E-MAIL EDITORS ETC.
Any program that deals with text can benefit by using ONE-Liner.
Just try it!
MODEM DIALER
You can dial your modem from the command line by using this
macro:
ECHO ATDT555-1212>COM1:|ECHO ATZ>COM1 // BILLS NUMBER
The echo sends the command to COM1: (use the proper COM #) and a
CR to start it. As soon as the person answers, press enter again
and the ATZ command will turn off your modem. These are Hayes
commands. They should work with most modems.

THE REST OF ONE-LINER
F1 - The help key. This is a reminder screen. Refer to this
documentation for more detail.
F2 - SEARCH You will be prompted to enter search text.
ONE-Liner will stop on the first match. You may press ALT+N
to find another.
F3 - SORT Sorts the file alphabetically in ascending order.
F9 - PRINT Not a fancy print. Just puts it on paper for you.
F10- UN-INSTALL This feature allows you to un-install ONE-Liner.
You should only use this feature if you are not popping up over a
program. Pop up ONE-Liner from the DOS prompt and then press F10.
When you exit ONE-Liner it will un-install itself. Refer to the
section on TSR's.
THE EDITOR
Up, down, left, right do the normal things. Here are some
others:
PgUp - Moves up a screen at a time.
PgDn - Guess what? Down a screen at a time.
Home - Beginning of line.
End - End of line (last character)
DEL - Deletes the character under the cursor.
Backspace - Erases character to the left of the cursor.
INS - Insert key toggles Insert or Overwrite mode.
ENTER- Inserts a new line beneath the one you are on.
CTRL+Y - Deletes the current line. Be careful; its FAST!!!!!
CTRL+D - Same as Ctrl+Y
ALT+N - Finds next match when searching.
ALT+X - Saves file but doesn't invoke AUTO-TYPE
CTRL+ENTER - Saves file and uses AUTO-TYPE to return text.
ESC - Aborts any changes and returns to program.
ONE-Liner(tm) 11 (c)1994 NCS Software
POSSIBLE USES FOR ONE-LINER
Here are some I thought of, Add some more to the list!
Store E-Mail addresses.
Steal Tag-lines off screen
Data entry macros for most text based programs.
Programming macros for commonly used routines.
Cut and paste between DOS programs that you use.
Store often used DOS commands for replay.
Create remark lines for source code (strings of '*')
Capture phone numbers off screen.
Use it as a phone dialer with your modem.
(echo ATDT 555-1212 > COM1:|echo ATZ>com1: // Bills number
Friend and Family Name & address.
Business contacts and numbers.
File to keep track of Credit card numbers. Exp date.
Uses for ONE-Liner limited only by your imagination.
