SYSTEM SETUP
------------
System requirements
-------------------
To install and run the College Hoops Pick-Em Pool Extravaganza!,
your computer system must have the following:
* IBM-compatible PC, running an 80286 microprocessor or higher.
* DOS version 3.3 or higher.
* Microsoft Windows 3.1 (version 3.0 or below will NOT run).
* 2 MB of system RAM.
* 2 MB of free hard disk space.
* A mouse or other pointing device.
* VGA monitor (color monitor recommended).
* A printer is not required, but is recommended to take advantage
of the software's printed reports.
Please note from the above that the College Hoops Pick-Em Pool
Extravaganza! is a WINDOWS 3.1 program, and will NOT run in DOS
without Windows 3.1.
Software setup
--------------
To setup the College Hoops Pick-Em Pool software, copy the program
files into their own subdirectory of your hard disk, and launch Windows
the way you normally do. When the Windows Program Manager appears:
- Select 'File' and then 'New' to create a Program Group called
'College Hoops'.
- Select 'File' and then 'New' to put a college hoops Program Item
into the group. Follow these guideline in the 'Program Item
Properties' window:
Description Command Line Working Directory
----------- ------------ -----------------
College Hoops Pool <path>\HOOPS.EXE <path>
Note: <path> denotes that you should enter the FULL PATH to the
directory on your hard disk in which you copied the College Hoops files.
Program documentation
---------------------
If you have the Windows Notepad utility on your system, select 'File'
and 'New' from the Program Manager menu to install the help files into
your College Hoops program group. Use the following guidelines to do
this once for each of the three available help files:
Description Command Line Working Directory
----------- ------------ -----------------
System Setup Help NOTEPAD.EXE <path>\SYSTEM.HLP Leave BLANK
Pool Setup Help NOTEPAD.EXE <path>\POOLSET.HLP Leave BLANK
Program Features NOTEPAD.EXE <path>\FEATURES.HLP Leave BLANK
The three Notepad icons that get installed can be used to access the
College Hoops help files (including this one) directly from the
Program Manager. These same help files can also be accessed from
within the College Hoops program by selecting Help from the main
menu. Again, information is presented on-screen using Notepad.
If you do not have Notepad on your system, you can still use your own
word processor to view or print the College Hoops help files. If you
wish to install Notepad, it comes standard with Windows 3.1. Refer
to your original Windows documentation for further information.
It is strongly recommended that you print all of the College Hoops
help files using Notepad or some other word processor so you can
readily refer to them whenever necessary. These files document
everything you need to know about setting up and using the software.
The help files are in readable text (ASCII) format, and appear in your
College Hoops directory as:
* SYSTEM.HLP - program installation and setup (this file).
* POOLSET.HLP - setting up a College Hoops Pick-Em pool.
* FEATURES.HLP - a point by point explanation of everything that
the College Hoops program does, and how to use each feature.
Running the program
-------------------
Start the College Hoops Pick-Em Pool Extravaganza! as you would any
Windows application: By double-clicking on the College Hoops icon
with your mouse, or by highlighting the icon and pressing Enter on
your computer keyboard. The main screen will appear with a title
window and copyright notice.
The program is completely comprised of standard Windows menus, buttons,
controls, icons, etc. with which all Windows users will be immediately
familiar.
You may note that the College Hoops program runs in a full-screen
("maximized") window. This is because some of the most important
windows in the program are too big to fit into a "normal" sized window.
Use the sizing buttons to reduce the size of the College Hoops window
if you need to view other parts of your Windows desktop. Simply
maximize the window again when you return to the College Hoops program.
Make selections from the Main Menu using the mouse or menu "hot keys"
(press 'Alt' to get to the menu, and then press the underlined letter
in the menu to make your selection). At that point, a sub-menu will
appear with a list of College Hoops Pick-Em Pool functions. Again,
use the mouse or hot keys to make a selection. The title window will
disappear, and your menu selection will be activated. From then on,
the title window will no longer appear, and the main screen will be
blank between selections.
Enhancing the look of the program
---------------------------------
The College Hoops Pick-Em Pool windows take on the system colors that
you assign to your Windows environment. If you wish to change the
system colors, activate the 'Main' program group from the Program
Manager, and choose 'Control Panel' from the group. Then select the
'Color' icon, and click on the 'Color Palette' button to set your
colors (select 'Help' for more information).
The College Hoops program looks best if you choose an attractive,
dark color for the Active Title Bar, the Inactive Title Bar, and the
Menu Highlight bar. Use a light color - like white - for the text
in these bars. Also, the program will look nicer if you choose a
light, pleasant-to-look-at color for the Application Workspace.
Something like a pale yellow or egg-shell white fits the bill just
right. Experiment with the colors on your particular system until
you find the ones you like best.
Setting up more than one pool at a time
---------------------------------------
To set up more than one pool for a college hoops tournament, copy the
files HOOPS.EXE and MERGE.EXE into DIFFERENT subdirectories on your
hard disk for each pool that you want to run. Then launch Windows
the way you normally do, and choose 'File' and 'New' from the Program
Manager menu to add a new College Hoops icon for each separate pool.
* * IMPORTANT * *
Repeat the above procedure for EACH pool that you want to set up.
Be sure to assign each pool a UNIQUE description and a UNIQUE directory
path in the 'Program Item Properties' window. This ensures that the
data you enter for the different pools will remain separate on your
hard disk, and that you will have different icons to click on in
the College Hoops group of the Windows Program Manager.
