ARLS006 Shuttle Carries U5MIR
QST de W1AW
Space Bulletin 006 ARLS006
From ARRL Headquarters
Newington, CT February 3, 1994
To all radio amateurs
Space Shuttle Discovery was launched on schedule on February 3 at
1210 UTC from the Kennedy Space Center, Cape Canaveral, Florida.
The six person crew includes Russian Cosmonaut Sergei K. Krikalev,
U5MIR. In April 1993, Krikalev was assigned as a prime mission
specialist for the flight. Krikalev is best known for his career
aboard the Russian Space Station MIR. With the completion of his
second MIR mission, he has logged more than 1 year and 3 months in
space, and has conducted seven EVAs.
The STS-60 mission objectives include microgravity experiments to be
conducted in Spacehab-2, as well as the Wake Shield Facility which
is a joint project between NASA and the Space Vacuum Epitaxy Center
of the University of Houston. The Wake Shield will test the
creation of an ultra-high vacuum in which to produce extremely pure
semiconductor thin film crystals. Additionally, joint US/Russian
sponsored science activities will be included in the mission.
The STS-60 mission will be the first joint US/Russian human space
flight since the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project in 1975, and the first to
involve Russian and American space travelers on the same crew.
Thanks to NASA for the preceding information.
Keep posted to W1AW teleprinter mode bulletin schedules and packet
for postlaunch Keplerian elements and additional SAREX information.
