  16. As a Library of legal deposit, the National Library of Scotland is
  17. entitled under the terms of the Copyright Act, 1911, to claim a copy of
  18. all printed works published in the United Kingdom and the Republic of
  19. Ireland. Since its foundation as the Advocates' Library in the early
  20. 1680s, the National Library has acquired an extensive collection of
  21. periodicals on a wide variety of subjects, through legal deposit,
  22. purchase and donation. While a measure of selectivity is exercised. most
  23. new periodicals due in terms of the Copyright Act, 1911, with some minor
  24. exceptions, are now claimed, and the Library currently receives almost
  25. 16,000 articles by legal deposit. In addition, the Library subscribes to
  26. a further 1,800 foreign periodicals which are outwith the terms of the
  27. Copyright Act, 1911. Until 1989 most of the periodical titles purchased
  28. were in the humanities and in subject areas that complement the
  29. Library's special collections. With the opening of the Scottish Science
  30. Library in that year, an increasing number of foreign scientific titles
  31. are now being purchased. The Library also receives over 1,000 titles by
  32. gift. A further 1,400 foreign scientific periodicals have been deposited
  33. in the Library by arrangement with the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

  35. From summer 1989, current scientific periodicals are available for
  36. consultation in the Scottish Science Library in the National Library's
  37. Causewayside Building, 33 Salisbury Place, Edinburgh EH9 1SL (Tel: 031-

  41. How to find a periodical in the National Library
  42. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  43. Current periodicals are listed in the Library's Current Periodicals in
  44. the National Library of Scotland (latest edition, June 1991), copies of
  45. which are available for consultation in the Issue Hall. The list is
  46. updated by (unpublished) bi-monthly supplements, which include:
  47.  
  48. 1.   New periodicals received in the Library.
  49. 2.   Periodicals which have ceased publication.
  50.  
  51. Readers who are unable to find in Current Periodicals a title which is
  52. still current, should not assume that it is not received by the Library,
  53. since certain categories of material, notably yearbooks, directories and
  54. some irregular publications, are excluded from the scope of the
  55. published list. Periodicals which are excluded from Current Periodicals,
  56. together with those which have either ceased publication, or are no
  57. longer received by the Library, may be traced through the Library's
  58. General Catalogue of Printed Books. Further information about these

  69.      by place of publication, e.g. The Celtic Review is entered under
  70.      P.P. - Edinburgh.

  75. 2.   Under the heading for the society, if the periodical is issued by a

  95. difficulty in tracing periodicals in the Library's catalogues, should

  102.      This catalogue lists the holdings of British and foreign
  103.      periodicals in the British Library Reference Division.

  105. 1.2  British Union Catalogue of Periodicals (BUCOP). (1955-8. With
  106.      supplements to 1980.)
  107.      BUCOP was devised as a Union list of the holdings of the major
  108.      British research libraries and, in addition to coverage of British
  109.      publications, lists a large number of foreign periodicals not taken
  110.      by the National Library. Arrangement within the Catalogue is
  111.      alphabetical by title. It is now superseded by:
