DOOM Editor requires the following:
DOOM (Commercial Mail Order version/Shareware version .99 or 1.1)
700K of Diskspace
Soundblaster or 100% compatable on PORT $220 to hear samples play.
(Sorry no GUS support....YET....)
Getting started: All DOOM Sound Editor files MUST be in your DOOM directory
containing the DOOM*.WAD file. Run DSEDIT.EXE. It will first detect which
version of DOOM you are using. If you are using a version not listed
above, then this version will not work - See Incompatable Versions below.
It will then try to initialize the Soundblaster if found. Your
soundblaster must be on port $220 to work - any IRQ will work. If your
soundblaster locks up at the initialization part, run the program as
follows:
DSEDIT -D
This will skip the inialization part of the soundblaster. This does not
guarantee that the soundblaster will play. Sorry! It will then find
all the samples in your .WAD file. After locating all samples, it will
request a backup of all your samples. This is to insure that you will
be able to reload the original sounds. It will save your original sounds
in a file called ORIGDOOM.DAT. If you are using the mail order version,
it will save the 12 additional sounds in a file called ORIGDOOM.DAC.
Once all this is done, the program begins.
Features: Once in the program you will be able to use the left and right
cursor keys to switch back and forth between the DOOM sound menu and
the current directory. Use the up and down cursor keys to move up and
down in either menu. The directory will only hold 300 files. As you
move up and down through each file and sample, you will notice a message
that will tell the compatibility of the file with the sample.
(P)lay - This is used to play the current file the cursor is on.
It can be a DOOM sample, or a file in the directory.
Certain files will not play because they may be a
directory, a hidden file, volume label, etc.
(R)eplace - This is used to replace the current sample with the current
file. If the file is bigger than the sample, it will be cut
off due to the fact that the lengths cannot be changed in the
.WAD file. If the length of the sample is greater than that
of file you wish to replace it with, silence will be added
to fill the remaining space.
NOTE: The file you want insert into the game can be any
raw data file. It can be a .VOC or .WAV or whatever. But
CANNOT be compressed and it MUST be recorded around 12000Khz.
(S)ave .DAT/.DAC file - This is used to save all your DOOM sounds into
one file. This way you can use multiple sound files. This
can also be used to give a friend your sound effects without
transfering your friend a big 4 meg file! Then your friend
can load the .DAT/.DAC file into his .WAD file using the
load function. Doom Sound Edit will prompt for a filename
to save it as. The will be saved in the current directory
window, and must end in either .DAT or .DAC. The .DAT is
used for the 49 samples in Episode 1. The .DAC file is
used only for the commercial mail order version.
(L)oad .DAT/.DAC file - This is used to load back the original sounds
saved in ORIGDOOM.DAT/ORIGDOOM.DAC. It may also be used
to load any other .DAT file you have previously saved.
To load the .DAT/.DAC file, move the cursor on top of the
file on the directory side, and hit L. It will then load
the sounds into your .WAD file.
(I)ncrease playing speed - This increases the speed of the playback.
NOTE: The faster the sample plays, the smaller the speed
value. The fastest rate is 25.
(D)ecrease playing speed - This decreases the speed of the playback.
(Q)uit - DUH!
DOOM Incompatible Versions
--------------------------
If your version of DOOM does not work with this version of DOOM Sound
Editor, chances are there will be another version of DOOM Sound Editor out
as soon as a new update of DOOM is released. As soon as we,the programmers,
get a hold of the newest update of DOOM, we will put support for it in our
program.

Doom Sound Editor was programmed in Borland Pascal 7.0. It contains over
1300 lines of code.
