Here are a few basic steps toward a good embouchure, the most important
element in the production of good tone:
1. The mouth should be shaped in a fashion you would
use to pronounce "oo" as in moon.
2. While still maintaining the "oo" shape, fold the lower
lip over the lower teeth.~HThe proper amount of lower
lip is crucial.~N No more than half of the red portion
of the lower lip should be over the teeth, to avoid
a muffled, dead sound.
3. Pull back the corners of the mouth in a smile, not a
wide ordinary smile which will allow air to escape
from the sides of the mouth, but a special sardonic
or devilish grin.

An Embouchure Exercise:
While playing a middle F with the thumb hole try punching up to an open C
above the staff without the use of the octave key. Unless the reed is too hard
this can be acomplished by firming the chin and ~Ha very slight jutting~N foward
of the lower jaw. You can probably continue down the scale several notes
without any octave key. The tension or firmness you feel in your chin while
performing this exercise is the sensation you should strive for during
normal play.~H Introducing this exercise as part of your warming up routine
may enhance your embouchure and resulting tone quality. ~N
