#TREED SELECTION & CONDITIONING
#C2,R5
Working up to harder reeds produces better tone quality and better
upper register response. Softer reeds tend to go flat. The adjustment
to harder reeds is not difficult.

The following is a suggested sequence for reed conditioning:
#D5
Day 1 - Soak reeds in tap water approx. 5 min.
Wipe off excess water.
Polish on slightly rough paper on glass surface.
Polish vigorously until back is uniformly shiny.
Dry in reed case overnight.
#D2
Day 2 - Repeat process.
Seal top side of reed using the soft (paper) side of a
small piece of sandpaper. Rubbing toward the reed tip.
Dry in reed case.

Day 3 - Soak and test play.
Play low and middle register only.
Score, if possible, as to quality of performance.
Do not test play over 5 min.
Dry in reed case.
#D2
Day 4 - Soak and test play.
Continue to play in low and middle register only.
Modify score.
Limit test play to 10 min.
Dry in reed case.
#D2
Day 5 - Repeat day 4 -play upper register.

Enter conditioned reeds into regular use. - It may be necessary
to adjust reeds that are too hard by removing~H very small~N amounts of wood from
the side rails using a reed knife and~H very small~N amounts from the tip (top
side only) using #600 wet/dry sandpaper. Never remove wood from the heart of
the reed. Some players can improve a soft reed by clipping, however this is
often with disappointing results.
#HH,20,12,50,2,10,1
A new synthetic reed named ~HFIBRACELL~N is worthy of mention. Fibracell reeds
are manufactured from a composite material which has all the characteristic
of cane. The reed is getting serious consideration from discriminating
clarinetists. The reed delivers the advatages of a synthetic reed with few of
the characteristic disadvantages.
