  3.   LICENSE NUMBER FORMAT:
  4.   The  State of  Washington issues  a fourteen  (14) character alpha-
  5.   numeric  drivers  license  number   consisting  of  one  (1)  alpha
  6.   character followed  by thirteen (13)  numeric characters with  dash
  7.   delimiters  that   break  the  number  into   a  4-4-4-2  grouping:
  8.   (Annn-nnnn-nnnn-nn)

  10.   Washington uses  the older soundex algorithm  to generate a license
  11.   number  from the  driver's name,  date of  birth, and sex, breaking
  12.   this information into coded portions as follows:
  13.  
  14.   Last name                             -  first four (4) characters
  15.   First name and middle initial         -  next three (3) characters
  16.   Year of birth                         -  next two (2) characters
  17.   Date of birth and sex                 -  last three (3) characters
  18.  
  19.   The last two  characters of the license number  are the check digit
  20.   and tie-breaker digit.

  23.   DOCUMENT:
  24.   The  plastic   laminated,  photographic  license   manufactured  by
  25.   Polaroid, displays the driver's photograph in the lower left corner
  26.   of  the  license  document.  A  repetitive  pattern of "Washington"
  27.   should appear within  the laminate over the textual  portion of the
  28.   document.  A state  outline should  overlap the  right edge  of the
  29.   photograph and  the state seal  appears on gold  behind the textual
  30.   data.

  33.   TERM:
  34.   License is  valid for two  (2) or four  (4) years, expiring  on the
  35.   driver's birth date.

  38.   MINORS:
  39.   Minor  licenses issued  subsequent to  January 1,  1993 show  a red
  40.   photograph backdrop  (for drivers under 21)  and "UNDER 21 UNTIL.."
  41.   above the date of birth.

  44.   CDL:
  45.   Commercial drivers license is indicated by "COMMERCIAL DR. LIC." in
  46.   the heading and also printed on the right edge of the laminate.
