USDL HELP
Navigational Conventions: There are many modules in USDL, and
several levels of help as well. Navigation through the modules
follows some simple conventions:
<escape>
will exit any help module or back up one level within the main
program. From the main menu, it will exit the program.
<tab>
will move to the next available input field in modules that require
input.
<enter>
will select the highlighted item at the main selection list or
initiate processing in modules that generate output based on user
input.
<F1>
will call context sensitive help from anywhere in the program.
<Ctrl-M>
stands for "more", and will open a reference file for the selected
subject from within the input portion of selected modules.
You can navigate the scrolling list of reference material in
several ways. You can use your mouse to activate the scroll bar at
the right of the box, then double-click on the item you want to
activate. You can scroll with page and arrow keys, pressing <enter>
on the desired item. You can also press the first letter of the
item you desire. Each time you press the letter, the list will
progess to the next item that begins with that letter. Press
<enter> when you reach the desired item.
Main Menu: You can activate the main menu at any time (except when
help files are showing) by pressing <Alt-M> or clicking on the
"Menu" bar with your mouse. The menu contains a number of items,
depending upon the module you happen to be using at the time:
<More Details>
Also accessible with the "hot key" <Ctrl-M>, More Details (a
detailed description) are available whenever you are in a module
that requires user input. You can also fine More Details at the top
of the main menu when they are available. Read the information
presented, print it if you like, and press <escape> to return to
the module from which you invoked the More Details command.
<RapidPrint>
Also accessible with the "hot key" <Ctrl-P>, RapidPrint is the
command used to send the currently displayed report to the printer
immediately. From within an interactive module, this will consist
of a formatted report just as it appears on the screen. From within
a textual information screen, the RapidPrint command will print
only marked text (if any is marked). If no text is marked,
RapidPrint will print the entire text file.
<Help>
Help is invoked with the <F1> key, or by choosing it at the main
menu. Occasionally, when changing modules quickly and invoking
help, the program may become confused about which help module to
display (receive a corrupted stack). This is not a problem. If the
help file displayed does not appear to correspond to the module you
are in, simply press <escape> until you are back at the main
selection screen. The help stack will be reset, and you may return
to the module you wanted help on, using keystrokes entered at a
more reasonable speed.
<∙Printer>
The Printer selection on the menu is a simple toggle. When Printer
appears with a '∙' before it, the printer is ON, and any reports
displayed by the program will automatically print. When the Printer
selection appears without the '∙' before it, the printer is OFF
<Disk File Output>
This selection, also invoked by pressing <Ctrl-D>, will invoke the
file output dialog. This dialog permits the user to select a file
for appending program output, and to toggle that output on or off.
The file dialog has it's own help module to assist you with using
it.
<Display Options>
The Display Options selection will open a dialog for use in setting
your preferences for the appearance of the program interface.
Although it does not permit global control of program colors, it
may be used to modify several options.
<About USDL>
The about option will display an "about box" containing information
about program version, contact information for the publisher, and
the name of the registered user.
<Exit Program>
Also available by pressing <Ctrl-X>, this option will exit the
program without prompting.
