TENNESSEE
LICENSE NUMBER FORMAT:
The State of Tennessee issues an eight (8) digit numeric drivers
license number with no spacing or delimiting characters between the
digits. License numbers are sequentially issued, with no
correlation between licensee's personal identifiers and the license
number: (nnnnnnnn)
DOCUMENT:
The plastic laminated license, has reflective gold "TENNESSEE" and
state seals forming a security pattern. Prior photo licenses were
in a clear plastic pouch. Non photo current licenses display a
security pattern in the data area, with earlier issues of this
format having a plastic covering. Pervious paper license was of
heavy paper stock with a security pattern and no laminate. Type of
license is indicated by color of photo backdrop, with white for
regular licenses. Current photo license has state district and
camera number at bottom of photo edte. Previous issues of photo
licenses have state seal and camera number over photo edge. Paper
license shows a state seal while plastic license displays the
division logo in upper left corner. Non-photo license has
authorizing signatures on fold- back side of license.
TERM:
License is valid either three (3) or seven (7) years, expiring on
the driver's birthday. Photo licenses issued subsequent to July 1,
1991, may be extended 4 years (5 years if after January 1, 1993)
with sticker placed on back of license.
MINORS:
Minor's license since March 1989 indicated by red band under
heading reading "UNDER 21 DRIVER LICENSE", with a red photo
backdrop and red "UNDER 21" on front and back of laminate. Previous
issues were identified by profile photo of driver.
CDL:
To indicate a commercial driver license, "CDL" appears in the
shadowed box below 21st birthday header. Non photo CDL's are no
issued.
