  3.   LICENSE NUMBER FORMAT:
  4.   The  State  of  Illinois  issues  a  thirteen (12) character alpha-
  5.   numeric  drivers  license  number   consisting  of  one  (1)  alpha
  6.   character  followed  by  seven  (11)  numeric  characters with dash
  7.   delimiters that break the number into a 4-4-4 grouping. The license
  8.   number   may    include   a   thirteenth,    'tie-breaker'   digit:
  9.   (Annn-nnnn-nnnn[-n])

  11.   Illinois  uses the  older soundex  algorithm to  generate a license
  12.   number  from the  driver's name,  date of  birth, and sex, breaking
  13.   this information into coded portions as follows:

  15.   Last name                            -  first four (4) characters
  16.   First name and middle initial        -  next three (3) characters
  17.   Year of birth                        -  next two (2) characters
  18.   Date of birth and sex                -  last three (3) characters

  21.   DOCUMENT:
  22.   The  plastic   laminated,  photographic  license   manufactured  by
  23.   Polaroid,  shows  the  driver's  photograph  on  the  right edge in
  24.   current  issue  documents.  Older  documents  showed  the  driver's
  25.   photograph on the  left edge. A three digit  security number should
  26.   overlap the edge  of the photograph nearest the  textual portion of
  27.   the document.  "ILLINOIS" should appear printed  vertically in blue
  28.   down the  left edge of the  laminate, and the state  outline should
  29.   appear over  the textual portion of  the license. "ILLINOIS" should
  30.   also appear in a small pattern across the laminate. The name of the
  31.   secretary of state should appear at the top of the license in blue.

  34.   TERM:
  35.   License  is valid  for four   (4) years,  expiring on  the driver's
  36.   birthday. Minor's  license expires three (3)  months after the 21st
  37.   birthday.

  40.   MINORS:
  41.   Minor license  shows a red  photograph backdrop (for  drivers under
  42.   21). Minor licenses also show red bars at the top and bottom of the
  43.   license within the laminate, and "UNDER 21" printed vertically down
  44.   the right side of the laminate and on the obverse side.
