FLORIDA
LICENSE NUMBER FORMAT:
The State of Florida issues a thirteen (13) character alpha-numeric
drivers license number consisting of one (1) alpha character
followed by twelve (12) numeric characters with dash delimiters
that break the number into a 4-3-2-3 grouping. The license number
may include a fourteenth, 'tie-breaker' digit:
(Annn-nnn-nn-nnn[-n])
Florida uses the older soundex algorithm to generate a license
number from the driver's name, date of birth, and sex, breaking
this information into coded portions as follows:
Last name - first four (4) characters
First name and middle initial - next three (3) characters
Year of birth - next two (2) characters
Date of birth and sex - last three (3) characters
DOCUMENT:
The plastic laminated, photographic license manufactured by NBS,
Imaging Systems Division, may show data boxes in red, blue, or
green. The driver's photograph comprises the left one third of the
license document, and should be overlapped on the right edge by the
Florida State seal and the camera number in black. Some licenses
also have "FLORIDA" printed vertically in ultra-violet sensitive
ink straddling the right edge of the photograph.
TERM:
License is valid for four (4) years. Safe drivers get six (6),
expiring on the driver's birth date. The license may be extended
one term with a certificate of renewal affixed to the obverse side.
MINORS:
Minor license shows a yellow photograph backdrop (for drivers under
21). Licenses issued subsequent to July 1989 display "UNDER 21"
vertically at the right edge of the photograph.
CDL:
Commercial drivers license is indicated beneath the license number.
