COLORADO
LICENSE NUMBER FORMAT:
The State of Colorado issues a license number consisting of up to
seven characters. Usually, one (1) alpha character is followed by
up to six (6) numeric characters. The alpha character prefix
indicates the year of issue of adult licenses. Drivers are issued
new license numbers on renewal. License numbers are sequentially
issued, with no correlation between licensee's personal identifiers
and the license number: (Annnnnn)
DOCUMENT:
Current issue license is a plastic laminated photographic document
manufactured by NBS, Imaging Systems Division. New issue license
contains 'COLORADO' printed within the laminate in gold over the
textual area. The driver's photograph appears in the lower right
corner. A large blue Colorado state seal shows within the textual
area, and a small blue state seal overlaps the left edge of the
photograph.
TERM:
Current (issued subsequent to August of 1989) adult license is
valid for five (5) years from the date of issue. Previously issued
license is valid for four (4) years from date of issue, as are
classified and commercial licenses. Minor and provisional licenses
expire twenty (20) days after the licensee's 18th or 21st birthday,
respectively. One year extension is available for out of state
renewals, while two extensions are available for out-of-country
applicants.
MINORS:
All license numbers prefixed with the alpha character "M" are for
minors (under 18). Licenses prefixed with "P" are for provisional
licenses (ages 18, 19, and 20) The current format
CDL:
Commercial license shows "COMMERCIAL DRIVER'S LICENSE" in a gold
colored header bar, and "CDL" in the upper left corner.
