ARIZONA
LICENSE NUMBER FORMAT:
The State of Arizona uses the Social Security Number as the license
number for commercial license holders, and for most other licensees
as well. At the driver's request, Arizona will issue a nine (9)
character, sequentially generated number bearing no correlation to
the driver's personal identifiers. New format sequential numbers
consist of one (1) alpha character followed by eight (8) numeric
characters with no spacing or delimiting characters: (Annnnnnnn)
Old format (still valid) sequential numbers consist of one or two
alpha characters followed by five or six numeric characters to
create a seven (7) character license number.
DOCUMENT:
New issue Arizona licenses are plastic photographic cards with
polyester coating and show the State seal and a security pattern
over the textual portion. New licenses have a roughened patch over
the birth date and have "ARIZONA" printed in ultraviolet sensitive
ink within this patch. Older (still valid) licenses may be plastic
laminated paper. The driver's photograph appears in the lower right
corner of the document.
TERM:
License is valid for four (4) years, expiring on the driver's
birthday, but may be extended for an additional four (4) years with
a green extension sticker affixed to the back of the document.
MINORS:
Licenses issued to minors show "UNDER 21" or "UNDER 21 UNTIL" in
red at some location on the license.
CDL:
Commercial licenses show a green or yellow heading of "COMMERCIAL
DRIVER'S LICENSE".
