TIPS FOR USING DM-VOILA
The primary goal of DM-VOILA is to help direct response
marketers quickly and easily calculate and/or analyze
sales, profits, and response. You can also run what-if
models and instantly change the many variables involved
in determining the success or failure of a direct
marketing campaign.
To start the program, simply type DMV and press enter.
The first time you run it, DM-VOILA will ask you to enter
a few numbers that it will use to create a file of
default values for some of the variables used by the
program. (What is your average selling price, cost of
goods, in-mail cost per thousand, etc.). If you want to
change these default values at a later date, simply erase
the file DMV.INI and start the program, or use the Change
Defaults option from the main menu.
The easiest way to get used to using the program is to
select option 1, Quick Check, from the main menu. This
option uses several default values in order to do a quick
and dirty analysis of a mailing. It merely requires you
to enter a cost-per-thousand mailing cost and your
selling price. You can change other values from within
the Quick Check analysis.
DM-VOILA will not perform highly sophisticated
multivariate regression analyses nor produce zip code
performance models. It WILL help you figure out how
you're doing and what you're doing -- especially how
much, if any, money you're making from your marketing
effort. It will also help you discover what changes you
need to make in your business or marketing methods in
order to make your efforts more profitable.
Some of my more wizened colleagues in the direct
marketing industry may find this program rather basic;
however, DM-VOILA is written to be used by anyone
involved at any level of responsibility or experience in
direct response marketing. I've attempted to make the
program's questions and presentations as clear and as
simple as possible so that the greenest beginners in the
field can reap the full benefits that DM-VOILA has to
offer. Whether you're a one-person operation working off
of your kitchen table, or the marketing director of a
multinational direct mail company, you should find DM-
VOILA a simple and convenient tool for producing the
financial information and analysis that you need at your
fingertips everyday.
I've got nearly twenty years of direct mail experience
behind me, and I've used the program almost every day
since I wrote it a couple of years ago. In fact, I wrote
it because I had a big need for a fast, easy way of
calculating and analyzing the financial impact of all of
the variables involved in a direct marketing promotion.
You'll find further information about running DM-VOILA
within the program itself. Basically, all you have to do
is answer the questions and push enter -- and voila!--
you've got all the response and P&L information you need.
Once you've used DM-VOILA a couple of times, you'll be as
expertly proficient in its operation as anyone in the
known cosmos.
