WHAT IS RIU?
RIU (Rip Icon Updater) is a utility that will let you download icons,
but a little more. It allows you to download an update file, or ripterm.
I looked at each of the offerings, and found that there wasn't much to
choose from. There were some fairly decent offerings but they were to
expensive or needed some kind of run time library. The one I liked best
didn't provide support for COM3: and that is a must for me! So I decided
to write myself one. It wasn't long before a couple sysop friends said you
gotta make this shareware, and "can you add this". The result is RIU.
Why a "download update" option? What if your icon file is fairly large,
and you add one icon? Why make a user get the whole thing again? Why the
download ripterm option? What if a caller dials in at 2400 baud and wants
it, but you limit callers to 30 minutes a day for instance? Let's see,
650K +/- 50K at 2400 baud? Hmmm, doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure
that one out!!! This way they can get it, without worrying about time
constraints. They will have burned their time for the day, but they will
have it without bugging you about it!
FEATURES
Supports Com 1-4 at least, maybe more. (Let me know!)
Supports DORINFO1.DEF, EXITINFO.BBS, CHAIN.TXT, SFDOORS, CALLINFO.BBS,
DOOR.SYS.
Supports locked bauds to 38,400 using fossil drivers.
Allows download of Ripterm, the icon file, and the icon update file.
Supports Rip display, ANSI and Avatar graphics mode.
Download with Xmodem, Ymodem, and Zmodem. No bat files to create.
Coded in C for freedom from Run Time Libs.
Supports chat, add/subtract user time, hang up, quit door, and other
sysop functions.
DISCLAIMER
Ya gotta have one! I did my best, but there may be a mistake just
waiting to wipe out your computer. Back up before you start. If you
don't, you are taking your life into your own hands, or rather your
computer's life. I will not be held responsible for any lost programs or
data as a result of using this program. I guarantee that it will take up
space on your hard drive, and if it doesn't, I will provide you with a copy
that does. I reserve all rights to this code. It is not free, 30 days is
all you get to use it without registration.
Distribute the archive far and wide, but keep it together please!
I make no promise to produce further revisions of this software,
nor do I make any claims of compatibility.
REGISTRATION
I only put a few hours work into this, and I think doors are to
expensive anyway. If you like this door, send me $5.00. If you don't like
it, give it to someone else who might. On the following page is an order
form. Make checks payable to "Andrew Murphy". If you send money, you are
taking a risk that the mail might loose it or that I might be a crook. Do
you feel lucky? Send the order form to this address: This address will
only be valid until june 10 1994. After that date NetMail me through Robin
Moore's BBS at 1:309/2 Via FidoNet.

fidonet if you have a node number. Three, I will mail it to you. If you

INSTALLATION
Installation of RIU is as simple as I could make it. It's only
prerequisites are that DSZ be in your path, and that you be running a
fossil driver. Before you start you will need a registration number and
the path and filename of these files:
1. Your complete icon file
2. Your icon Update file (Again, if you dont want one use path from
#1 above, or some other file if you like, maybe a bbs registration)
3. Your latest copy of ripterm
Follow these easy steps to install RIU.
1. Make a directory for it anywhere, and unpack it there.
2. Get a registration key
3. Run RIUCFG.exe to generate the configuration file. The config
file is described later.
4. Create a bat file that changes to the directory containing RIU,
and run it, passing it the Path to your door drop file (door.sys,
chain.txt, dorinfo1.def etc). This is an example bat file that
assumes your door.sys type file is in subdir "BBS". If you do
not run a fossil driver see the section on fossils later.
@echo off
c:
cd \riu
RIU c:\BBS\
5. Run it! You can log on locally to take a look at it.
Custom Menu Setup (Registered copies only)
Setup of custom menus requires only that you have a legit registration
key, and that you put menus in place. There are 4 menus needed, and
you need not have all 4 in place. Each menu should clear the screen when
it is drawn, and when a button is selected to leave it. Otherwise, menus
may overwrite each other. Menu types are RIP (.RIP), ANSI (.ANS),
and ASCII (.ASC).
1. MainMenu.* The Main Menu, selects download ripterm, download
update icon file, all icons file, or continue
logon.
2. ProMenu.* The Protocol Menu, selects x/y/z modem or abort.
3. Start.* Selects either start download or abort download.
4. Unpack.* Says Drop to dos and unpack icons into icon
directory, press return to continue.
There are three @codes with RIU. They are:
1. @UPDATE@ Date icons last updated. Taken from UPDATE.zip file
works with menus 1 & 2.
2. @LASTCL@ Date caller was last on your BBS. Works in menus 1 & 2.
3. @FILENAME@ Name of file selected from main menu. Used in menu 2
only.
SYSOP Function Keys
[UP]/[DOWN] Use the arrow keys to increase or decrease the
amount of time which the user has left in the
door.
[Alt]-[C] Allows the sysop to break into chat with the
user at any time. [Alt]-[C] again, or [ESC]
will end chat mode.
[Alt]-[J] Allows the sysop to shell to DOS, if enough
memory is available. Simply type EXIT to
return to the door again.
[Alt]-[H] Hang up on the user when the sysop does
this.
[Alt]-[L] This key locks the user out of the BBS. It
first hangs up on the user, and then sets
their security level to 0, in the door drop

[Alt]-[K] "User Keyboard-Off"
[Alt]-[D] "Drop to BBS" key. This function allows the
sysop to exit the door and return the user to
the BBS, without hanging up.

the
sysop access to various types of information
on the status line, or to turn the status
