WHAT IS AUTOMAILpm ?
AUTOMAILpm is a simple collection of batch files and PCL
programs that allow you to set up pre-extraction of your
BEST callers' QWK mail packets.
Run after mail transfers, or as part of an event, it will
scan the mail conferences and assemble a QWK packet for
the configured callers. When the caller calls in next, it
will send the pre-extracted file automatically, and give
them the option to continue or log off. They don't have
to wait for the QWK to be assembled.
Of course, this is great for the Sysop too. The QWK's
can be assembled in off-peak hours, taking the strain
off the BBS resources during peak hours.
Running this utility is simple. Set up your user accounts
as described below. Create the mail packets by running
EXTRACT.BAT from your PowerMail directory. And, that's it!
When callers download their packet, it is deleted from
the system, and this prompts the creation of the next QWK
the next time EXTRACT.BAT is run.
Suggestions for use:
The following assumptions have been made in designing
this utility:
- The caller is a regular caller who downloads
QWK packets of a generous size
- The caller uses the Z-Modem protocol
- The caller's password is a maximum of 8 characters
in length, and contains no characters inconsistent
with DOS filename conventions.
Some operating conditions you should be aware of:
Callers packets are deleted as soon as they have been downloaded.
If a caller has not picked up the packet by the time the mail
collection (EXTRACT.BAT) is run, their mail pre-extraction will
be passed over. It is suggested that idle accounts be terminated
promptly. In particular, the sysop should review pointers and
replies from time to time to ensure that the BBS resources are
being used optimally. Mail not being read is junk mail.
Encourage callers using this system to keep their "Selected"
Conferences current with their needs.
SETTING UP AUTOMAILpm 1.00
This is really very simple:
- create a sub-directory of PWRMAIL called LOKLMAIL
- reconfigure PowerMail to use the LOKLMAIL directory for
local packet uploads and downloads.
- add the following line to your OPEN.CTL file:
After the lines:
*CONNECT
UserLogin(%NDNUMB%, User %NDNUMB%: %NDNAME% Logged on (%BAUD%))
Add:
If(/SEC)=(30) then LoadSub(control\macros\EXTRACT.CTL)
substituting the security level of your choice for this
option. I'd recommend only allowing you best callers to
have access to this feature, but of course, the choice is
yours.
PLEASE NOTE that the files presented here assume that your
main BBS directory is called "BBS". If it is named "PB" or
something else, check the path statements in these files to
make sure the pathing is correct.
CREATING NEW AUTOMAILpm ACCOUNTS:
With this release of AUTOMAILpm, new-user accounts must be
created manually. We hope this will change in future releases.
But, here is the check-list to create new accounts:
1) Copy NAME.BAT to "user'sname".BAT
2) Edit "user'sname".BAT
- change NAME to "user'sname" (line 2)
- change PASSWORD to user's password (4 instances)
3) Edit EXTRACT.BAT
- following the sample, add a new section at the bottom
of the file, changing the previous user's account
to "goto" this user's account (rather than "NEXT")
- The users' accounts are headed by a label (:FIRSTNAME)
Follow this convention where possible, and keep it
consistent.
4) Log on LOCALLY to your BBS using the "user'sname" and
password. Then (G)oodbye to terminate the call. Please
note that this MUST BE A LOCAL LOGON.
5) Copy the following files from your main BBS directory to
your PowerMail directory.
from: to:
\bbs\DOOR.SYS \pwrmail\"name".sys
\bbs\NODEx.INF \pwrmail\"name".inf
\bbs\DORINFO.DEF \pwrmail\"name".def
Now edit the "name".sys / .inf / .def files to contain
the correct FIRSTNAME, LASTNAME, and PASSWORD.
Refer to the SAMPLE files for help.
THE DISCLAIMER:
Of course I cannot be held responsible for the fitness or
functionability (or non-functionability) of this software.
It works well here on my BBS, but if you feel nervous about
using it, don't use it. You, the sysop, are already used to
your own BBS configuration, and every configuration is different,
so it is up to you to decide whether or not this software will
be compatible with your own BBS configuration.
THE OBLIGATORY BEG:
If you find AUTOMAILpm useful, a small donation would be
appreciated (say $5.00 ??). I am saving for a couple of
megs of RAM (SIMM's, if you have some to spare).
If you can't afford that, please feel free to use AUTOMAILpm
anyway.
Anything you can afford can be sent to:
