  8. Atlanta. I have the pamphlet "Medical Marijuana Truth  and Lies" and a
  9. press release "Position Statenent on 'Harm Reduction'". There are about
  10. 260 lines to follow. Did you notice the atrocious pun in the organization's
  11. acronym? You may score some  points with it.

  25. Lie: Marijuana is an effective medication for neasea associated with
  26. cancer chemotherapy.
  27. Truth: Oncologists overwhelmingly reject the idea of prescribing smoked
  28. marijuana. Crude marijuana contains over 400 different chemicals. THC,
  29. the main active ingredient in crude marijuana, is available as the
  30. prescription drug Marinol, for the treatment of nausea associated with 
  31. chemotherapy; however safer and more effective anti-emetic medication
  32. are available and preferred by oncologists.

  34. [Ed: Marijuana is effective in combating nausea from transcribing. What
  35. is the point about the 400 chemicals in crude marijuana, there's 800
  36. chemicals in crude brocolli. Where is the information on ocnologists
  37. preffered medications coming from?]

  39. Lie: Marijuana is a beneficial treatment for glaucoma.
  40. Truth: There is no scientific evidence that marijuana prevents the
  41. progression of visual loss in glaucoma. While marijuana, as well as
  42. alcohol and a host of other substances, and lower intraocular eye
  43. pressure, the medication must be carefully tailored to the individual to
  44. prevent further eye damage. Besides numerous adverse side effects of
  45. smoking marijuana, the dose cannot be controlled.

  47. [Elvy Mussika (sp?) is receiving US government marijuana that she
  48. credits with saving what remains of her sight. This is anecdotal
  49. evidence, not a controlled study of smoked marijuana's efficacy against
  50. glaucoma. This evidence is echoed by numerous people that are not so
  51. fortunate as to receive medical marijuana legally. Why does DWI think
  52. people should be thrown in jail for not wanting to go blind?]

  54. Lie: Crude marijuana is effective in treating the wasting sysndrome
  55. associated with AIDS.
  56. Truth: Smoking mairjuana compromises the imune system and puts AIDS
  57. patients at significant risk for infections and respiratory problems.
  58. Current scientific studies show that Marinol (oral THC),which is
  59. effective in icreasing appetite but is ineffective in increasing weight
  60. gain.

  63. is not being studied because of political posturing. This is an outrage,
  64. politics should not stand in the way of scientific research. Once again
  65. their is massive anecdotal evidence in favor of the "lie" in DWI's view]

  68. patients by not allowing the prescribing of marijuana.

  70. efficacy, quality, purity and safety necessary to be considered
  71. medicine. It is neither compassionate nor medically responsible to
  72. prescribe harmful impure substances to ill people.

  75. one of the safest therapeutically active substances known to man. Purity
  76. is something that could be regulated, just like it is with
  77. brocolli...How do you make the link between not meeting a set of
  78. requirements to being harmful and impure. The government is not
  79. witholding medicine from people. They are locking up people for trying
  80. to stay alive and painfree.]

  82. Lie: Smoking marijuana reduces the spasticity associated with multiple
  83. sclerosis.
  84. Truth: In a recent double-blind scientific study, the latest high-tech
  85. electronic equipment was used to determine if smoked marijuana had any
  86. benefit in treating spasicity in patieints with MS. The study found that
  87. all patients receiving marijuana rather than palacebo perceived their
  88. spascity to be lessoned, when in actuality, it was made worse.

  91. results are true - does that justify putting Jimmy Montgomery in
  92. prison for what he perceives helps his problem?]

  94. Lie: Many doctors want crude marijuana available so they can prescribe
  95. it to their patients.
  96. Truth: Most doctors want the best medicine possible for their patients.
  97. Although synthetic marijuana (THC) in a pure and standardized form is
  98. available by prescription, it is often the last choice of doctors,
  99. because better medicines as available. The American Medical Association,
  100. the Federal Drug Administration, the National Multiple Sclerosis
  101. Society, the American Glaucoma Society, the American Academey of
  102. Ophthalmology, and the American Cancer Society have all rejected the use
  103. of smoked marijuana as medicine. Marijuana is not recognized as a
  104. medicine in generally accepted pharmacopeia, medical references or
  105. textbooks.

  108. so. Nonetheless doctors have councilled patients to use marijuana if
  109. they want t save their eyesight, stay alive through chemotherapy. These
  110. large bodies of doctors would be prescribing it were it available, and
  111. were the studies to prove it's efficacy allowed to happen. Why did the
  112. government (NIDA) block the AIDS wasting study? Because there could be
  113. scientific evidence found showing it's efficacy? How does throwing
  114. people in jail help the patient, regardless of whether it is effective?]

  123. Leaf marijuan is not medicine. It is a harmful psychoactive drug.
  124. composed of over 400 different chemical, whcih should not be used by
  125. anyone, especially people who are ill.

  128. In the last several years, the public has seen the issue of the
  129. therapeutic applications of leaf marijuana reach the level of
  130. discussions of public policy. This movement has been fueled by the
  131. forces seeking to legalize marijuan. Br having marijuana listed as
  132. medicine, they hope to "legitimize" marijuana.

  137. alternative medical treatment for any illness.

  139. Marijuana use has serious health consequences. Concentration, motor
  140. coordination, memory, lungs, reproductive and immune systems are all
  141. adversely impacted by marijuana use; marijuana is addictive.

  143. Physicians who treat people for cancer, AIDS, glaucoma and other
  144. diseases do not favor the use of marijuana.

  146. Not one American health organization accepts marijuana as medicine.
  147. These include the American Medical Association, National Multiple
  148. Sclerosis Society, American Glaucoma Society, American Academy of
  149. Ophthalmology and American Cancer Society.

  151. FDA/DEA have repeatedly rejected marijuana for medicinal use. Marijuana
  152. fails to meet any of the Drug Enforcement Administrations or Federal
  153. Drug Administration's eight criteria for approving drugs for medical

  156. Even Marinol, a synthetic form of THC (tetrahydracannibinol), available
  157. by prescription for treating nausea, has far more negative health
  158. effects than other available agents.

  160. There are numerous and more effective anti nausea agents. These include
  161. Prochlorperazine (Compazine), metaclopramide (Reglan), lorazepam,
  162. corticosteroids, thiethylperazine (Torecan), ondansetron (Zofran),
  163. promethazine (Phenagran), perphenazine (Trilafon), and chlorpromazine
  164. (Thorazine)

  166. The pro-drug lobby exlits the suffering of patients with chronic illness
  167. with false promises about marijuana as medicine. They have stated that
  168. they are pushing marijuana as medicine and are using it as a "red
  169. herring" as part of a strategy to legalize marijuana for general use.

  172. get used by some people as medicine. Whether there are more effective
  173. drugs for the various illnesses it is used for is irrelevent. Why should
  174. people be thrown in jail for attempting to treat themselve? Ethical

  176. medicines, why won't the government let such research be conducted? What
  177. possible good does it do to put Jimmy Montogomery in jail?]
