02/25/1993 TRENTON, N.J. (UPI) -- A New Jersey police officer
acquitted of a videotaped beating is back on the job.
Officials in Trenton say Earl Hill will be assigned to desk duty
and may still face departmental charges.
A jury last week found Hill not guilty of official misconduct. He
was charged 15 months ago after a bystander taped him slapping
Thomas Downing.
The incident took place as Hill and another police officer
arrested the son of Downing's girlfriend. Hill said Downing tried to
interfere with the arrest and had to be subdued, but prosecutors
charged that he engaged in lawless behavior.
Hill was suspended without pay. Public Safety Director Eric
Fontaine says he will not get back pay until the department finishes
its administrative review.
