PITTSBURGH (UPI) -- Pittsburgh has placed an additional 20 police
officers on patrol in specially designated high-crime neighborhoods.
Pittsburgh officials say the move is designed to give the police
department higher visibility in areas where it is most need.
Officials say the patrols, which began Tuesday night, should be a
deterrent to criminals and provide some reassurance to residents of
high-crime neighborhood.
The beats were created after police identified the neighborhoods
most in need of extra police officers.
Officers who volunteer for the duty are being paid overtime to
patrol for gang activity, drug dealing, robberies and prostitution.
Most of the areas consist of a few blocks and are designed to
patroled on foot when weather allows.
