  2.    DETROIT (AP) -- Police officers beat a motorist to death with a 
  3. flashlight, continuing to strike him even after he was handcuffed 
  4. and paramedics had arrived, the police chief said Friday. Seven 
  5. officers who took part or watched, including a supervisor, were 
  6. suspended without pay.  
  7.    In a case that bore some similarities to the beating of motorist 
  8. Rodney King in Los Angeles 20 months ago, officers inflicted fatal 
  9. head injuries on 35-year-old Malice Wayne Green after a traffic stop 
  10. Thursday night, Chief Stanley Knox said.  
  11.    The police department is carrying out an internal investigation and 
  12. will report to the Wayne County prosecutor's office, Knox said. He 
  13. wouldn't say what charges would be sought.  
  14.    According to Knox, Green was stopped by two veteran plainclothes 
  15. officers, whom he wouldn't identify. "We didn't get a good reason why 
  16. the vehicle was stopped," he said.  
  17.    The officers called for backup, and at least five more police officers
  18. responded, including a sergeant, Knox said. 
  19.    Green was black. Knox said the seven officers included blacks and whites. He
  20. couldn't say whether race was a factor in the beating.  
  21.    Also in question was when the beating started and how many officers were
  22. physically involved.  
  23.    "Not everyone actually struck a blow," the chief said. He said his
  24. understanding was that the two officers who stopped Green were the ones 
  25. who killed him.  
  26.    "Indications are he may have been struck prior to his leaving his car," 
  27. Knox said. "The fact remains he was struck and we are investigating to 
  28. find out exactly when, where and how."  
  29.    Green continued to be struck even while he was handcuffed and after
  30. paramedics had arrived, Knox said.  
  31.    Green died in the emergency room at Detroit Receiving Hospital.  
  32.    Mayor Coleman Young said he was "shocked and sickened" by Green's death.  
  33.    The victim's father, Jesse Green Jr., said he was unsure what happened.  
  34.    "(Police) don't have to beat nobody like that," he said. "I don't care 
  35. who it was."  
  36.    In March 1991, Rodney King was repeatedly clubbed and kicked by Los 
  37. Angeles police officers after a high-speed car chase in a Los Angeles 
  38. suburb. King was badly injured. The beating was captured on videotape 
  39. and led to a national outcry over police brutality, particularly of 
  40. minorities. King is black.  
  41.    The acquittals of four white officers on nearly all charges in the 
  42. beating set off rioting in Los Angeles this spring in which 53 people 
  43. were killed.
