MADISON, Wis. (UPI) -- Mayor Paul Soglin vowed Wednesday to
continue efforts to pass one of the most stringent gun control
measures in the nation, even though voters rejected his proposal.
Voters Tuesday opposed a referendum urging the Common Council to
adopt an ordinance banning handgun possession by a vote of 28,808 to
27, 591.
The proposed ban would have been the first of its kind in
Wisconsin. It called for prohibition on possession of handguns and
automatic firearms. It would have allowed possession of antique
guns, spring- loaded guns, devices used for signaling or safety and
any device used exclusively for the firing of industrial stud
cartridges.
Licensed collectors, law enforcement officers, state and federal
agents, security officials and retired police officers would have
been exempt from the ban.
Soglin blamed the narrow rejection on "tremendous media buys
within the last several days" by handgun ban opponents. He pledged
to continue his fight.
"When you've got a decision this close, it's not nearly over," he
said.
