  1. INTEGRATED SERVICES DIGITAL NETWORK - PRIMARY RATE INTERFACE
  2. (ISDN-PRI)

  4. PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:
  5.  
  6. ISDN-PRIMARY RATE INTERFACE (ISDN-PRI) offers the customer a set of standards
  7. which provides end-to-end digital transmission over a single access line.  It
  8. is composed of 23 B channels and one D channel.  For this reason, it is often
  9. referred to as 23B&D.  The PRI speed is 23 "B" channels at 64 Kbps and one D
  10. channel at 64 Kbps.

  12. Functions of ISDN-PRI Service:
  13.  
  14. -     Provides 23 full-duplex 64 Kbps B-channels and one full-duplex 64 Kbps
  15.       D-channel.
  16.  
  17. -     Intended for users with greater capacity requirements.
  18.  
  19. -     Provided over a four-wire T1 circuit between the customer's premises
  20.       and the central office.
  21.  
  22. -     Designed to be used in any application where multiple network
  23.       connections would be appropriate today, such as a:
  24.  
  25.       -    PBX.
  26.       -    Multiplexer.
  27.       -    Data switch.
  28.       -    Any other device capable of controlling large numbers of B
  29.            channels.
  30.       -    Individual channels are switchable.  The service provides digital
  31.            access to the public telephone network, which then deals with
  32.            individual connections dynamically.
  33.       -    The 23 B-channels could be standard voice calls or a mix of
  34.            switched voice, virtual private lines, packet-switched data,
  35.            circuit-switched data, or video.
  36.       -    B-channels can be aggregated to increase bandwidth (when
  37.            higher speeds are required).

  39. ISDN-PRI is primarily used to access the central office from a PBX, but can
  40. also be used to connect a multiplexer, LAN or mainframe to the public
  41. switched network.

  43. This technology provides for the dynamic allocation of the individual
  44. channels on a call-by-call or time-of-day basis, reducing the trunking
  45. requirement needed to access the network.  Used as a tie line, PRI provides
  46. for feature transparency between like vendor CentraNet/PBXs.

  51. -     Connection of PBX systems to PSTN for voice transmission.
  52. -     Connection of cluster controllers to PSTN for data transmission.
  53. -     Connection of LANs and hosts.
  54. -     Connection of multiplexers to the PSTN.
