FRAME RELAY SERVICE
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:
Frame Relay is a public data transmission service that permits transmission
of data at speeds from 56 Kbps to 1.544 Mbps. Frame Relay technology is an
evolutionary step beyond X.25 for improving network efficiency and
accommodating more data-intensive applications, such as wide area
interconnection of LANs at 56 Kbps and 1.544 Mbps rates.
High-speed data transmission is provided via fast packet switching, which
replaces physical transmission facilities in wide-area meshed data networks
with permanent virtual facilities. Frame Relay is a data-only service which
requires digital transmission using one of the following transmission
mediums:
- 56 Kbps (dedicated)
- Fractional T1 Access
- T1 Access
BENEFITS INCLUDE:
- Complexity of the network is reduced.
- Existing CPE can be used or upgraded easily.
- Provides a cost-effective alternative for data transmission.
- Bursty transmissions are supported.
- Any protocol can be used.
- Allows customer to control end-to-end transmission facilities.
- Can be migrated to higher speeds.
- One loop talks to many locations.
APPLICATIONS:
- LAN-to-LAN bridging and routing.
- Mainframe-to-LAN/Mainframe connections.
- Terminal-to-host connections for Systems Network Architecture (SNA).
- Collapsed backbone.
- T1 alternative.
- DDS alternative.
- Multicasting will be available in 1994.
