This morning ar 6:00 am I was laying in bed (here in Chicago) tuning
around on my Sony SRF-A100 (great radio) when I decided to see what
was on 880khz. Figuring that WCBS would be gone and perhaps a
semi-local daytimer would be coming in.
Well I heard country music faintly in the background and thought it
might be KRVN (Lexington Nebraska) or KGHT (Sheridan Ark). At the
top of the hour I heard "you are listening to AM 880 WRR?" I checked
my handy M-street guide and found the only WRR? station on 880 was WRRZ in
Clinton North Carolina with 1kw daytime.
I called the station and sure enough, it was them. Through his studio
monitor in one ear and the radio in the other I could tell they were
the same song.
It was 7AM there and broad daylight. It was after dawn here too.
I had a nice discussion with the DJ there and he is having his
engineer send me a verification and perhaps other station stuff.
Not a bad catch, huh? Keep in mind that this is right next to local
50kw WLS which was on the air at the time!.

I just noticed tonight that W-lite (WLTT) in Washington
is now Arrow 94.7 (WARW) "All Rock 'N Roll Oldies". Given
that they are owned by CBS it must be a similar format to
the other Arrow stations that CBS owns.
I don't know when they changed formats. I tried calling the studio
line, but they didn't answer. The format sounds almost identical to
Classic Rock WCXR in Washington. Given that WCXR has had horrible
ratings over the last several years I can't imagine why CBS thinks
they would be succesful with this format in Washington. Two similar
sounding stations dividing a 2.5 share doesn't sound like a recipe
for success to me.

Mainstream sends digital subcarrier info at 25 Kbps using
an Amplitude Shift scheme running a Hamming FEC code. Actual
throughput (minus FEC overhead) is 19.2Kbps on ONE subcarrier!!!

True. I've never tried the CompuServe address but I have written to
him, and recieved responses, using the America On-Line address. I
have also heard him say that he has (or had) a Prodigy account, but
was not happy with that system.

Subject: LOCALISM & ETHNIC RADIO
From: "Leslie A. Clingman" <37KHR4R@CMUVM.CSV.CMICH.EDU>
Organization: Central Michigan University
ATTENTION PERSONS INTERESTED IN THE TOPICS OF LOCALISM & ETHNIC RADIO:
I am a second year graduate student in the Broadcast & Cinematic Arts
Department at Central Michigan University where I am embarking on the task
of beginning by Plan B paper (an independent research project).
I am still working on defining the parameters of my research, although I
know I am interested in researching some aspect of local, ethnic radio, in
particular, those stations which broadcast American Indian language/cultural
programming.
According to the 1993 Broadcasting & Cable Yearbook, the following stations
broadcast at least 10 hours/weekly American Indian language-news-historical-
music-and/or cultural programming:
ALASKA: Nome - KICY 850 AM
ARIZONA: Tuba City - KGHR 91.5 FM
_ KTBA 1050 AM
Whiteriver - KNNB 88.1 FM
CALIFORNA: Hoopa - KIDE 91.3 FM
NEW MEXICO: Alamo Community - KABR 1500 AM
Farmington - KNDN 960 AM
Gallup - KGAK 1330 AM
Ramah - KTDB 89.7 FM
Tse Bonito - KHAC 880 AM
Zuni - KSHI 90.9 FM
OREGON: Warm Springs - KWSO 91.9 FM
WISCONSIN: Reserve - WOJB 88.9 FM
If anyone out there either works at these stations, is familiar with them,
or just shares an interest in the topic of localism & ethnic radio; I would
appreciate any 'feedback', information, or thoughts you may have on this
subject.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation!

Howard

wouldn't
say he has talent

I have never heard Imus, but I have heard Stern.
While anyone with Stern's success could hardly be called a loser, that
does not mean he has 'talent'. Stern appeals to a very base level in
people, and in many markets, he is the best they have.
He could not cut it in Chicago, however, and I am glad he is gone.
But he is certainly not a loser, not by a long shot.
Remember that Rush has a radio show, a TV show and TWO hit books out :-).
While I disagree with Rush on a lot of things, he is much more
entertaining at his WORST, than Stern is at his best (IMHO).
Stern's TV show (the original 'creative' one) is history and he does
not do a good Barbara Walters on the 'E' channel IMHO.
