* Group W Radio is about to add a second AM signal in the Boston market.
Group W which already owns WBZ-AM 1030(NewsRadio 1030) is about to
close the deal for financially-troubled Celtics owned and operated
an all-sports(with an exception of weekday morning syndicated Imus
show) 5,000 watt WEEI AM 590(SportsRadio 590). Both Boston morning
dailies report that the deal should be announced shortly. The sale price
is reportedly somewhere between $2.5 and $3million. When the Celtics
bought the station in the spring of 1990 they paid $6.5million to
Papa Gino's Pizza chain. The current all-sports format replaced
long running all-news programming in September of 1991. If the deal
goes thru Group W will have 2 out 6 major AM signals in the city.
I would venture out and guess that Group W people will now try to make
a strong bid for the Red Sox radio rights which could make WBZ-WEEI
a real sports powerhouse(WBZ owns rights to NFL's Patriots,WEEI owns
rights to NBA's Celtics and NHL's Bruins).
* Boston's #1 morning DJ Matt Siegel who had been with Pyramid's WXKS-107.9FM(CHR)
for the last 12 years will begin to syndicate a special Saturday morning
show(6-10am) starting sometime in January of 1994. Stations in LA, Chicago,
NYC and of course Boston are already on board...Siegel also plans to
syndiacte his weekday highly-rated show sometime later in 1994...
* Former WXKS-FM personality John Garebidian has his own nationally
syndicated Sunday night dance-oriented music on WJMN-94.5FM(Jam'n)
from 7pm-12am. The show is broadcast from the basement of Garabedian's
house in the suburban Boston. Garebidian's show is called 'StreetJam'.
It has replaced long-running 'ClubClassics' with Vinnie Peruzzi that
used to air from 9-12 on Sunday nights...

Must be the company mandate or something...About a month ago Infinity's
WZLX-100.7(Boston's Classic Rock) classic rock outlet in Boston was
doing exact the same thing...All the DJs pretaped their shifts so
it was made it for some very weird listening with no mention of time or
weather during AM and PM drives...I wonder if Infinity's other classic
rock stations throughout the country did 'The History of Classic Rock' week
as well...

After about thirty years of following radio and its many changes, I have
come up with the following scenario. What if, in 1951, Alan Freed had to
deal with the myriad of consultants and marketing research data involved
in today's radio programming? What would have happened to popular music?
-- Tabloids would be talking about reported sightings of the Late, Great
Frankie Laine many years after his tragic death in 1977. Laine, as
you know, set record sales and concert attendance records all through
the fifties and sixties.
-- Amidst screams of "Doggie in the Window", Patti Page would be starting
on her 1993 world tour. Cities are reporting instant sellouts for all
concerts.
-- Promoters have upped the ante to get the "Fab Four" back together
again, the Four Aces. Former leader Al Alberts says, "No way. That
stage of my life is over."
-- Meanwhile, from Liverpool, local art teacher John Lennon tries to
get enough students to make a living wage.
-- Finally, in Memphis, a testimonial was held for Crown Electric
Company President Elvis A. Presley to honor his 40 years as an
Electrician. Occasionally he talks about the handful of records
he made for local labels in the fifties. He says he doesn't have
much interest in music any more.
Meanwhile, it's back to "Classic Hits Radio".........

Kansas City radio news:
Excerpted from the Kansas City Star, 10/26/93:
Monday brought different assignments to four on-air personalities at
adult contemporary radio stations KUDL-FM and KMXV-FM.
The shuffle reflects a market research poll of 700 adult-contemporary radio
listeners commissioned last summer by the stations' owner, Apollo Broadcasting.
Apollo owned KMXV and took ownership of KUDL from Shamrock Broadcasting late
last month. . . .
KUDL's target audience is women 25 to 54 and the station broadcasts middle
of the road adult contemporary music.
KMXV tries to attract its target audience, women 25 to 49, with more uptempo
adult contemporary music.
"You have some people who are 25 years of age who want to hear KUDL-type
music and some people who are 25 who want to hear Mix-type music . . . ,"
[ellipsis in Star article; Mix 93 is KMXV's slogan] said Fred Murr, general
manager of the stations. "(The research) had to get into musical taste."
This week's on-air personnel switches were made to better match the sytle of
music played with the personality behind it, Murr said.

For 25 years, Phil Jay's name was synonymous with oldies station WHB. But
last month new station owners replaced him with a farm format and on-air cow
moos.
Tom E. Beal, owner of the KFEZ "easy listening" station, says Jay now is the
host of his station's morning show. Has Jay forsaken Elvis for Barbra
Streisand?
Not yet. "I just do slogans," Jay says. "'Good morning, I'm Phil Jay, your
morning host on KFEZ--easy music for an easy morning'--things like that."
But that's it. "I won't be introducing songs or anything," Jay says.

...KY-102's Paul "Fredrocks" is history at the FM album rock station. "He
resigned," says program director Scott Souhrada. Why? "I'd rather you get
that from him."
One KYYS employee said last Friday: "I got a memo that said he resigned,
but when I saw him leaving this morning, he was in tears."
Fredrocks' final show was last Thursday, Souhrada ssays. "Right now we'll
take care of (his) shift on a temporary basis."
Fredrocks could not be reached for comment.

[Background info: KFEZ is at 1190 kHz, 5 kW, stereo, nostalgia/MOR format.
KYYS is at 102.1 mHz, 100 kW, somewhat stale AOR format. Fredrocks' real last
name is Fredricks. WHB is at 710 kHz, 10 kW, used to be stereo until
KMZU(FM) Carrollton, MO bought it and converted the oldies station into a
farm and country-music station. Moo.]

Radio news from the rest of Missouri:
Columbia-area radio station KBXR signed on for its first official day of
broadcasting October 15.
The adult-alternative album station is owned by former executives at
community station KOPN(FM), Patricia Watkins and Dave Taylor.
The station had been on the air for several weeks on a sporadic basis,
playing everything from old Edward R. Murrow newscasts to Bob & Ray comedy
records.
The station's slogan is "Where The Music Comes First." It may fill part of
the market niche left by the sudden demise of University of Missouri
alternative-rock station KCOU(FM). KCOU(FM) left the air September 22 after
its owner, the Residence Halls Association at the University of Missouri,
claimed the station was over budget. All of KCOU's volunteer management was
fired.
KBXR is licensed to Ashland, about 15 miles south of Columbia (halfway
between Columbia and Jefferson City). Its studios are located along with the
studios of KFRU(AM) and KARO(FM) in Columbia.
The nature of the relationship between KBXR and KARO/KFRU is somewhat
unclear, but the management of the combo is currently serving as sales and
management consultants to the KBXR management. It's rumored that KARO/KFRU may
eventually buy KBXR.
KBXR is at 106.1 mHz (C1) with a power of 28,000 watts.
*** *** *** *** *** *** ***
Jefferson City station KKFA(FM) has reclaimed its old call letters and is
trying a new format.
KKFA formerly programmed an adult-contemporary format with the slogan "Soft
Rock Cafe." It is now KTXY(FM), but it has not gone back to its former CHR
format. Instead, it is trying a modified AOR format with the slogan "Rock
without the Hard Rock." The format change occurred early in October.
KTXY is a class-C station at 106.9 with a power of 100,000 watts.

From the St. Louis Journalism Review, October 1993:
The list of radio owners in the St. Louis market keeps getting smaller.
With EZ Communications' purchase of the two Gannett properties [KUSA(AM) and
KSD(FM) -- EZ owns KYKY(FM)], the town loses another broadcast company. Rumors
abound that Emmis Broadcasting, which owns KSHE, has been looking for another
property here, but it's not known if they would be interested in KXOK-AM & FM,
which are up for sale.
Insiders have known for some time that KXOK was having financial problems.
Michael Frischling, whose father owns the parent company, was unable to come up
with enough money to follow through on an LMA with Evergreen's WKBQ/KASP
[subsequently sold]. Evergreen cancelled the agreement and kicked Frischling
and his stations out of the studios on Hampton Avenue.
[Also note: KUSA(AM) has reclaimed its former call letters of KSD(AM).
Gannett owns the call letters, which are used on its Denver TV station.]

Also from SJR, October, 1993:
While the biggest news of the Summer 1993 Arbitron was the dramatic rise by
KEZK [A/C], there are other trends worth noting.
KMOX, the perennial giant of the market [1120 kHz, clear-channel], is
showing signs of recovering from its long audience erosion. Some dayparts have
started to show audience increases over the shares registered in the same
survey a year ago. It is surprising, though, that the station's share increase
wasn't more, given the fact that this survey came during July, August and
September. One would have thought the high impact flood news would have been
more of a tune-in factor for the market's radio news voice. . . .
At WKBQ, it appears the loss of a high-profile morning team [because of
on-air racial slurs] took its toll. The drop in morning number was from last
year's 4.3 to a current 2.7. [WKBQ is a CHR station.] . . .
Another station showing across-the-board increases in every daypart is
KFUO. While not mentioned in many other assessments of the Arbitron, this
station continues to develop a growing share of the market. [KFUO(FM) is a
classical station.]
[NOTE: This time, the SJR did NOT print the full set of Arbitron numbers.
Perhaps they assumed readers already saw them in the Post-Dispatch, although
the Post-Dispatch's coverage of radio is among the worst of any major American
newspaper--ironic for a newspaper that was one of the pioneers in radio and
TV!]

The following numbers appeared in the Kansas City "Star", 10/20/93. Once
again, the Star's accompanying article was a just a shallow recitation of
the numbers with some reaction quotes from station managers. No 25-54 or
18-34 numbers were given. The 18-34 numbers would have been especially
interesting, in order to see how well KLZR (Lawrence, KS, 105.9 mHz, C1)
penetrates the market with its modern rock format, the only one available
anywhere near here. In the spring, KLZR managed a 0.6 in the 18-34 demo,
although it really belongs in the Topeka market.
That's despite a signal that is somewhat spotty in the metro area, especially
in Kansas City, MO, where RF front-end overload is a real problem.

SERBIAN OPPOSITION HIT BY UN
-------------------------------
A Radio station providing one of the few outlets for political
debate in Serbia has been hampered by United Nations sanctions.
Radio B-92 in Belgrade, which exists as an antidote to the
misinformation and hatred spread by the state-backed-media,
has found it impossible to get spare parts for equipment.
Although the UN has exempted independent media from the sanctions
imposed on Serbia, that exemption has not been respected on the
ground - with the result that broadcasts have already been
interrupted.
In an appeal to supporters outside Serbia, B-92 editor-in-chief
Veran Matic said "We are asking you to contribute to the
preservation and further development of independent media in
ex-Yugoslavia by letters and petitions to your movements,
newspapers, and to the UN Security and Sanctions Committee."

as part of my ongoing research, i need to find out something else...
if a radio station is chartered as a school organization (ie. submits a
constitution, and becomes a "recognized student organization" by the
student council), and then gets into trouble with the fcc, who is
responsible for paying the fines incurred? would it be the responsibility
of the organization, or of the school? (or does it simply depend on the
school?) mainly, who would the fcc go after?

I heard the following official station ID at

Looks like the FCC has finally approved the call letter switch.
The station identified itself officially as "WLUP-AM Chicago"

in the binary mode within FTP. If you have trouble with FTP, or are on a
system that does not allow FTP, let me know at rrb@deja-vu.aiss.uiuc.edu,
and I'll try to assist. For those using DOS or Macintosh platforms, there
are utilities available free, or as shareware, that will decompree Unic .Z
files. We hope to have an archive server up and running shortly so you
can retrieve files via e-mail automatically.
Thank You.
