Subject: Administrivia: New email 'help' server for rrb/AIRWAVES
From: wdp@airwaves.chi.il.us (RRB MODERATOR)
Organization: Airwaves Radio Journal
OK, it is finally up and running (sort of).
The first parts of the rrb/AIRWAVES help-daemon are installed.
For now, the three main files which are most often requested, can be
retrieved via simple email instructions to our HelpServe daemon.
First, send email to the 'archive site' address - rrb@deja-vu.aiss.uiuc.edu - .
In the Subject: field of the mail header, place one of the following commands:
HELP Sends back the "Welcome To RRB/AIRWAVES message which is
periodically posted th the group and list. It explains the
charter of the group, posting guidelines and tries to answer
other questions.
INDEX IRJ Sends back the entire index of issues and subjects from
the days of the INTERNET RADIO JOURNAL. This file is
about 100kbytes long and lists all Journals which are
currently archived at deja-vu.aiss.uiuc.edu, and the
subject (title) of each article contained within.
INDEX AIRWAVES Sends back the index file for AIRWAVES RADIO JOURNAL
issues (which began with issue 400).
More files will be added as they become available and are deemed necessary.
ALSO, we now auto-acknowledge all article submissions. If you send in
an article and do not receive your auto-reply, let me know. Send
along a copy of the article so I can check to see if it was actually
received and you just didn't get a reply OR if the article was lost.
Feel free to beta-test these features and send me bug reports, or
glowing praise <yeah right>.
Soon we plan to implement an email-based archive retrieval program.
Stay tuned
Bill

So, "acoustic" is a dirty word, eh? I wonder why stations don't position
themselves by the demographics they're after rather than a contrived
format. It might make the formats more listenable. "Well, we play PB40
(Post Boomer Over 40)..." or RWKWNTD (Rich White Kids With Nothing To
Do). It would certainly be less confusing to advertisers...and probably
more realistic a gauge.

this is to correct my new post. i was describing 'Adult alternative,'
not 'adult album alternative' which as a category is new even to my ears.
AAA appears to be a cross between AOR and New Rock, and in my mind comes
closest to what used to be known as 'progressive,' that is, an eclectic mix
of new and old geared for adults.
scanning the airplay charts (which is always dangerous), it looks like the
following could qualify: WXRT/Chicago, WKOC/Norfolk, WRLT/Nashville,
WVGO/Richmond, and KTCZ/Minneapolis.
i've personally heard WWCD/Columbus, WTTS/Bloomington, and KTHX/Reno [last
year], which could probably qualify, too.
the protoype AAA in my mind would have been WDST/Woodstock, NY, ca. a few years
ago. i believe they've shifted to a more alternative feel.

adult alternative, speaking broadly, is a format that can include but is not
limited to contemporary jazz and pop-based vocals but with a core group
of artists from, oh, the last ten years. It may also be known as "new AC
(NAC)", or even contemporary instrumental if a particular station decides
to drop the vocals. Typical stations - KTWV/ L.A., KKSF/S.F., or your local
"Wave" affiliate. Typical artists - George Benson, Billy Joe Walker Jr.,
Oleta Adams... [those are a sample of names taken from a recent top 10
airplay list].

I can only answer your first question - I remember it. That was a
GREAT show to fall asleep to in the days before Larry King. Trouble
was, I never heard the end of any of them...
I too would be interested in hearing if there are tapes or (better
yet) if anyone is broadcasting reruns.

I used to listen to a DJ in the LA area known to his listeners as "Sweet
Dick" aka Dick Whittington along time ago on radio station KGIL.
Does anyone know what happened to this AM Discjockey....Did he retire ??

Excuse me, but (in the smallest possible voice) why did they ask YOU to
set up a radio station if you don't know anything about it? There are
those of us who have apparently been wasting our lives specializing in
this sort of thing. Maybe you ought to engage the services of a
professional. Your fellow broadcasters might appreciate it in the long
run.
This is not a personal slam, but do you have any idea what it is like
on this side of the counter when someone seems to think that he will
become a broadcast engineer in five minutes when it took thirty years
for a dummy like me to learn what I know (and I still have to ask other
people about many things)?
Good luck putting your station on the air. It would, however, take
slightly more than an e-mail message to contain everything you will
need to know.

Last saturday Johnny Walker (a DJ of BBC Radio-1) interviewed an American
pop-singer and ask him the same question. This guy was a bit embarrassed
because he did not know, but still used the 'AAA' expression.

INFORMATION
Here are the basics. For a complete file on the charter of this publication
and it's guidelines, send email to the Internet Address of
rrb@deja-vu.aiss.uiuc.edu with the word 'help file'
as the subject.
1) AVAILABILITY: Anyone with an e-mail account on any major system can
subscribe to Airwaves. There is no charge for subscriptions. Some
non-Internet systems do charge a nominal fee for reading Internet e-mail.
Also, all articles published in Airwaves are echoed to Usenet newsgroup
rec.radio.broadcasting. The subscription desk's e-mail address is -
SUBSCRIBE@airwaves.chi.il.us
2) SUBJECTS: Virtually any topic that pertains to domestic radio broadcasting.
3) POSTING: You may post directly to Usenet - or - you may email articles
directly to ARTICLES@airwaves.chi.il.us. All articles are reviewed by
the editor/moderator prior to posting.
4) POLICIES: Basically just keep the flame and noise levels down, stay on
topic, edit quoted text as much as possible, and try to keep the
'Brain-To-Bullsh*t' ratio as high as possible :->.
Again, for a complete file on these topics, see 'help file' above.
5) ARCHIVES: We keep archives of all past issues available for FTP at the
Internet site of deja-vu.aiss.uiuc.edu. They are in the directory -
/misc/rec.radio.b-cast, and are arranged in sub-directories acording to
issue number. All are in gzip (.z) format and should be transfered
in the binary mode within FTP. If you have trouble with FTP, or are on a
system that does not allow FTP, let me know at rrb@deja-vu.aiss.uiuc.edu,
and I'll try to assist. For those using DOS or Macintosh platforms, there
are utilities available free, or as shareware, that will decompree Unic .Z
files. We hope to have an archive server up and running shortly so you
can retrieve files via e-mail automatically.
Thank You.
